Indiana police evoke outrage with ‘Breathe Easy: Don’t Break the Law’ T-shirt sales

An Indiana police officer has irked several in his South Bend community with a T-shirt he’s selling that touts a take-off slogan of the “I Can’t Breathe” mantra that followed New York suspect Eric Garner’s death — “Breathe Easy: Don’t Break the Law.”

The aim of the shirt’s message is to say “police are there for you,” the South Bend uniform store owned by Mishawaka Police Cpl. Jason Barthel said in a statement, the New York Daily News reported.

What interests me is how to maintain good policing and fix the problem.

People who serve in small, elite military units know that the men sometimes need to be brought down to earth, that the attitude of separation and being special sometimes needs to be squelched from the high spirited men.

While policemen are not soldiers or elite soldiers, they need it far more, instead there doesn’t seem to be any force that will redirect them and remind them that they serve the public during their work shift, and are not at war with the public.

Your post seems to indicate that as long as it is limited to blacks, it is OK for you, that “the hood” justifies what cops have become all over America.

Best approach is to remove deadly force, or any force as an option in dealing with the public.

LE needs to get creative! Give em tickets/court appearances, if they jump, stake out their house shut off utilities, boot their vehicles. Or just tackle and tase them till they die, and claim innocence.

I will not submit! I am not a slave to the state!

The term “breathe easy” relates to the choke hold and asphyxiation death of Garner.

He was NOT put in a choke hold, and he did NOT die of asphyxiation. He died of a myocardial infarction in the ambulance on the way to the hospital. Please stop spreading the lie. Thank you.

Do you believe that in this case, that the cop should have used lethal force, or force with the real potential to cause death or serious harm, because Garner was resisting arrest?

IMHO I think most of this is a concoction of the media. Not saying that there aren’t bad eggs out there, but I think there’s an agenda in how the media portrays these incidents.

I thought we were supposed not to trust the media. Yet it seems many here believe everything the media says when it comes to cops.

It goes back to Rodney King, all the media showed was the part of the video with the police striking Rodney......what they didn’t show was Rodney attacking the Cops.

“When you can’t breathe, you can’t speak”

The amount of air needed for speaking is considerably less than the amount of air needed for sustainable breathing.

So you’re saying that there was no force exerted or minimal force on Garner’s neck/trachea?

Would you agree that sufficient force exerted on someone’s trachea could cause hypoxia?

Would you agree that hypoxia could cause a myocardial infarction?

I don’t need the media to tell me what I know about cops.

It isn’t the media, people are living in a time when we see police moving through our communities in a coarse, crude, impatient, and deadly manner, like poorly trained and indifferent occupation troops, who shoot first or conduct beat downs, without any serious oversight from their command.

In fact, does anyone here really want to try and describe any real overseeing authority over our local police? The Mayor, the City council members? Some civilian review board that we used to hear about but which never had any effect?

In most major cities, the police union, the Firemens union, the teacher’s union, the city employees union, are the power that controls the government over them, that is how they are looting our city coffers for their pensions and early retirements, and face no true authority greater than their own.

Either we get control of the police, and policing in America, or we don’t, and what we see today is not where it will be 20 or 30 years from now, as their institutional power over our cities grows..

How is your police state different than the Taliban's Police State?

Laws differ, but enforcement unto death is the same outcome.

Land of the free to be murdered and robbed by the Police State.

“enforcement unto death”

is the basis of the power of government to enforce anything.

Denying that actually EMPOWERS oppressive gov’t.
Leftists like to ignore that little negative aspect of empowering the gov’t to do ANYTHING.

They are inherently giving the gov’t the authority to kill someone that doesn’t comply.

Nazi is as Nazi does.

You have the right for the police to assault you, and charge you with terrorism without recourse. Of course they usually just whack ya on the spot.

I have yet to see anything about the police sergeant at the scene. This is the person in charge and did not make any attempt to do anything. Oh, by the way, The sergeant was a BLACK WOMAN. Perhaps she was an affirmative action, lowered standards officer who was promoted due to quotas instead of knowledge, skills and abilities.
