The U.S. Navys Pacific Commands recent announcement that it has successfully completed tests on its GhostSwimmer unmanned underwater vehicle prompted an immediate rebuttal from Russia: They, too, are close to unmanned submarine drones.

Interesting. The Navy will eventually come to the grim conclusion that advanced drone technology has made their big surface ships especially the carriers vulnerable, indefensible and obsolete.

As others have posted, carriers are great for fighting Third World scum but if war ever comes against a major power the carriers will be goners within 48 hours with all the advances in submarines and cruise missile technology.
Your comment about carriers being a first casualty of a major war was correct based upon a special I watched on TV years back. That stuck in my mind. Hope we're wrong.
What special was that? I read “Red Storm Rising” and Clancy had the Ruskies sink a French carrier and knocked out a US one at the opening of the war with Backfire bombers swarming the carrier battle group with cruise missiles and decoys.
Maybe that was it.
In this day and age of camouflage fighting and stealth, Aircraft carriers are concealable like a fart in the woods .. or in a cave.
With the advance and proliferation of missile technology, even third world rat holes have the ability to destroy an American capital ship. Think asymmetrical warfare and the USS Cole. China is probably just sitting back and enjoying watching the US and Russia military spend themselves into economic oblivion. Then the Chicoms can just pick up the pieces at their leisure.
Perhaps we are wittingly or unwittingly following the Reagan strategy against Russia, inducing the Russians to spend more than the economy can afford on trying to outmatch the American military.
Perhaps, but i always wonder why the US military keeps announcing to the world their latest technological achievement. Is there no more wisdom in keeping such secret?
Maybe. I suspect the military announces what is to the military “old tech” and not the latest thing at all.
Tethered drones are a perfect cheap counter to cruise missiles.
Drones are much more revolutionary than people realize.
They’re cheap ‘Kamikaze’ weapons.
