There was a TV show during the 90s called "seaQuest DSV", starring Roy Scheider, Michael Ironside and Stephanie Beacham (yummy), about a sophisticated submarine that also a mother ship for drone submarines. Looks like that vision of the future is going to become a reality.

Interesting. The Navy will eventually come to the grim conclusion that advanced drone technology has made their big surface ships especially the carriers vulnerable, indefensible and obsolete.

Osama announced just the other day that he's going to make our military “leaner”. Not much meat left on the bone as it is.
Your comment about carriers being a first casualty of a major war was correct based upon a special I watched on TV years back. That stuck in my mind. Hope we're wrong.

Perhaps we are wittingly or unwittingly following the Reagan strategy against Russia, inducing the Russians to spend more than the economy can afford on trying to outmatch the American military.
