The compassion shown by Officer William Stacy to desperate Alabama mother Helen Johnson captured the nation's attention at a time of strained relations between the police and black Americans. Instead of arresting her for stealing five eggs to feed her starving family on Saturday, Stacy bought the carton and the touching hug they shared afterwards caught on video by a stunned passer-by went viral. But it got even better on Wednesday when Officer Stacy and some colleagues arrived at 47-year-old Johnson's home with two truckloads of food to keep her and her children and grandchildren fed through Christmas.

A friend of a friend is an assistant director of a local food bank. Used to be the clients were single moms, the unemployed, the homeless. Today many of the food bank's clients are people who once had good jobs, decent houses and were doing well. But some calamity occurred — an unforeseen catastrophic illness (and resultant medical bills), loss of good health care insurance forcing them to obtain dinky plans with higher premiums and/or deductibles, layoffs, loss of their homes and so much more. We can easily say, save money for a rainy day and avoid getting into too much debt, but the reality is that even those who have been responsible about money have exhausted their savings and with no money coming in, they are having to make hard choices — the mortgage payment or groceries, the hospital bill or groceries, etc.
While there are still a lot of irresponsible losers bleeding charities dry, we should not assume that everyone looking for help is a lazy lowlife grifter. Some of these clients could be your friends, neighbors or family members. They could one day be you.
exactly
When North Korea lost millions to famine in the 90’s it was the ones who trusted the government to provide that was hit the hardest when the government had no food to distribute. Those who used the black market and did illegal deals n the side were mainly the ones who survived.
Generally of course.

Apparently this was in Tarrant Alabama and Alabama uses ebt cards which makes the whole premise of this, that her welfare check was lost in the mail, a lie.
gotta go now,
Can’t read with these damned tears in my eyes.
She didn’t try to buy individual eggs. She had $1.25 and thought she could buy 1 dozen eggs. They were almost $2.00 so she slipped 5 eggs into her coat pocket, that’s one egg per person in her house. All 5 eggs broke.
I drove 40 miles yesterday to a Dollar General Store to support them for not filing charges and letting the officer handle it. I told the manager and asked her to pass it along to corporate.
bump
Let’s not go overboard trying to prove cops are human beings.
Get her a ticket to Mexico have her sneak across the border and as God is my witness she will never go hungry again!!!
>> “he simply asked her never to shoplift again.” <<
.
“Go, and sin no more”
You probably know the story about the "food insecure" scam. The leftists use that lie to convince millions of well-meaning Americans about all the "hungry" Americans out there. Who really believes that? There are so many resources to get free food, it's doubtful more than a very small pct. of Americans actually go hungry.
I've handed out money to people asking for a few dollars. I hoped they spent it on a meal. And if I know some person or family is actually going hungry, I'm over there with a sack of potatoes and a sack of beans.
But it really irritates the sh.. out of me when I hear constant ads trying to convince me many millions of Americans are going hungry. I know the leftists are in overdrive trying to convince gullible people that capitalist America just can't feed its citizens. The facts prove otherwise. The poorest pct. of Americans are the fattest.
Thank you for your excellent work!! You have my utmost respect!
Given our EBT & out of control welfare programs, it’s literally impossible.
Yeah. I was under the impression that “schools” are now feeding “the children” three meals a day and snacks. Of course, if they are feeding Mocchelle Obama meals, I can see why the kids are starving.
Part and parcel of poor parenting.
It turns out that poor people realy DO have poor ways.
Around 1963 I was a kid living in Arizona. My mother had died and my father took to the bottle. Sometimes he would not come home for three days. I was the youngest of four brothers. They would send me to a nieghbors house to ask for food. The nieghbors would help. One day a Phoenix motorcycle cop showed up at our front door. A neighboor had called about us. He came inside and looked around our house and at us and just got back on his motorcycle and left. About 15 minutes later the same cop returned with a bag of lunch meats, bread, soda pop, chips, etc. We all dug in. The cop had gone to the local store and bought us food with his own money.
Or of feeling charitable at Christmas.
:)I have a story.I worked in a poor section of town for a few years. There was a couple who used to come in because it was a thrift store. They were raising 2 young one’s and also 3 grandchildren because the daughter was on drugs. He worked but hurt his back and no money was coming in.He went to walmart and stole a coat for his 3 year old granddaughter. The police were called and the officer bought the coat for her.He drove them home and then came back a few days later with coats for all the kids and bags of food. The woman told me the story.
Although I’m not privy to how they handle lost checks, I do think it takes anywhere from 2 weeks to a month for them to issue another one. So, if this is true, she sounds like she was really in dire straits.
This is true. In the NYC school system, the welfare kids get three really good meals a day. I know because my niece cooks and serves for them. She is their real mother.
Mind you, she is in her late fifties and has severe scoliosis. She stands on her feet 8 hours a day doing what these kids’ moms neglect to do.
No wonder they call her “mom”!
