In fact, according to the authors of the new paper, there is a 90% chance that a GRB powerful enough to destroy Earths ozone layer occurred in our stellar neighborhood some time in the last 5 billion years, and a 50% chance that such an event occurred within the last half billion years. These odds indicate a possible trigger for the second worst mass extinction in Earths history: the Ordovician Extinction. This great decimation occurred 440-450 million years ago and led to the death of more than 80% of all species.

I wonder if you could call elderly women who go to the Trop to see baseball Gamma Rays...
Don’t let Al Gore in on this. He will immediately label us all as Gamma Ray Burst Deniers and predict the end of the world as we know it if we don’t send him money.
For the remaining percentage, living underground has some TEOTEAWKI advantages.
I’m not too concerned about different galaxies at this point.
Yeah, my first reaction is "this is low on my priority list."
Understandable.
That’s why I moved to this one.
Yea i’m having a hard time deciding what i care more about, Distant Galaxies or the well being of the illegal invader.
Is it possible that there are gamma rays that will only remove LIBs?
No, she isn’t safe. Get a load of that old guy’s leer!
Evidently a lot of people did send him money. He has a mansion in Tenn., a mansion in Calif., and a penthouse in NYC!
By the way that house in Calif. will fall into the ocean IF glowbull warming is true! LOL
Not even on Star Trek were they able to leave the galaxy by normal Star Trek means.
On star trek voyager they were only about halfway across the galaxy some 70,000 light years and 70 years from home.
I got an excess of solar radiation in a Ford Galaxie once. It was a convertible. does that count?
CC
Gamma ray bursts are caused by global warming, which is caused by evil capitalism! /s
“Yeah, my first reaction is “this is low on my priority list.”
When we lobbied for the funding of the STS Space Shuttle in 1971-1972 on Capitol Hill in a Congressional Hearing, one of our arguments was the urgency of establishing permanent Human habitats beyond the Earth to prolong the ability of Humanity to survive.
In particular, the establishment of Human communities among the asteroids of this Solar System is a major key to human survival. It is a foregone conclusion all of humanity inhabiting the Earth will be killed by one or more catastrophic events sooner or later, with sooner being any day of the future. Anything from the impact of a large asteroid on the Earth to the occurrence of a Gamma Ray Burst (GRB) in our own galaxy can occur on any day. The same can be said about any human communities in the atmospheres on the surfaces of other planets and moons in this Solar System. This is because the only protection against the occurrence of GRB events to close to our Sun is a thick shield of matter such as the rock and iron of a large asteroid habitat.
The Solar System’s asteroids offer enough resources to permanently support human populations thousands of times larger than our present population on the Earth. These asteroidal habitats are capable of sheltering Humanity indefinitely, and long after Human life on the Earth has become extinct.
Consequently, the GRB events we are observing in the distant galaxies have an immediate application to present life on Earth to the extent they provide warning for humanity to take immediate precautions for the permanent survival of Humanity.
Of course, there are always people who could care less about the survival of Humanity.
No, but you do get some gamma-ray exposure from bolts of lightning you can see.
No one is safe when Arlo’s alive.
Geologists, being by nature very conservative in their thinking, are unlikely to embrace this idea. They want to find something in the fossil record to hang their hat on, something very unlikely to be out there for Gamma Ray Bursts.
