Fear Not: Quarter-Mile Asteroid Is No Threat To Earth, NASA Says
universetoday.com ^ | on December 9, 2014 | by Elizabeth Howell

“While this approximately 400-meter sized asteroid has a three-year orbital period around the sun and returns to the Earth’s neighborhood periodically, it does not represent a threat because its orbital path does not pass sufficiently close to the Earth’s orbit … Any statements about risk for impact of discovered asteroids and comets should be verified by scientists and the media by accessing NASA’s Near Earth Object (NEO) program web site.”

“Any statements about risk for impact of discovered asteroids and comets should be verified by scientists and the media by accessing NASA’s Near Earth Object (NEO) program web site.”

Sure, we know, the science is settled! Scientists wouldn’t lie or hide data and the media wouldn’t go along with them if they did. /s

Look at how the “climate scientists” and “media” worked in collusion while they fabricated, fudged and spun the Global warming(AGW)hoax. Does anyone doubt that they wouldn’t do it again?

Now they tell us that only the official government sites and “approved” media outlets are to be trusted? Sound familiar?

Does anyone really believe they would tell us if there was a good chance it might hit? Probably lots of people would believe them and be reassured if they say there is no chance.

Would they dare to tell us the truth if it was imminent though? Not a chance.

There is always a chance of another unknown object in deep space colliding with or just nudging one slightly and that WOULD change its orbit. Maybe in just the wrong way, too! To state categorically otherwise is foolishness.

Thanks BenLurkin’ for this post.

Regards, SS1

....well, I used to run the 400m as a kid and I won’t be forgetting it’s a long way anytime soon. That’s an ELE.

Or a Third Option unacknowledged as yet.

Could a major earthquake or volcano change the earth’s orbit?

On the other hand, there is a 2 meter hemorrhoid in the White House that is a real danger.

If were going to indeed hit us, I wonder whether they would tell the public. I don’t believe they would.

Hey..... Maybe that’s why the governments and those in power seem to be doing the craziest things lately? Perhaps they know something the rest of us don’t.

A quarter-mile wide boomer would be very hard on us. :’)

Yeah, if we get a REALLY big one, I just hope it hits near me.

I’d rather take the ‘Express Lane’ out, rather than suffering through and aftermath, only to die anyway - but slowly/miserably.

I’d agree, although we don’t have much choice — even today, the most likely scenario is a large impactor will arrive out of the blue, without advance warning. Hope that it lands on the oceans.

Well, that’s just it. Orbits can EASILY change. A gravitational tug by a planet/another object, impacts, ect. Sure orbits don’t change on their own by a significant amount, but there are MANY ‘things’ that can make changes happen.

We don’t have a thorough accounting of what’s out there. We don’t know what we don’t know about. No one had any IDEA that close call over Russia a few years back was going to happen. If that thing would have went straight into the Earth over a populated area, it would have been catastrophic. No one saw it coming.

Our planet WILL get hit by a ‘big one’ eventually. We can only be comforted by the fact that our Solar System and the Universe is a dammed big place, and it PROBABLY won’t happen within our lifetimes. Humans most likely won’t even be here when it happens again.

Yeah, landing in a DEEP part of the oceans would give humanity the best shot.... Those living far inland anyway.

Apples versus truckload of oranges. The Chelyabinsk meteor was an apple. It is true that nobody saw it coming. The largest intact piece would have destroyed a building, but not caused a catastrophe. The meteorite was 20m.

The newly discovered object is 400m. Its orbit cannot easily change since it is being tracked and interactions with other objects can be calculated. Even if it hit a unknown 20m meteor like the Chelyabinsk meteor, the path won't change much and can be easily reanalyzed.

The orbit doesn’t have to change.

It’s the orbital calculations that might change.
