Ben Edelman is an associate professor at Harvard Business School, where he teaches in the Negotiation, Organizations & Markets unit.
Ran Duan manages The Baldwin Bar, located inside the Woburn location of Sichuan Garden, a Chinese restaurant founded by his parents. Last week, Edelman ordered what he thought was $53.35 worth of Chinese food from Sichuan Garden

He has no discrimination.
He’s a machine that punishes. If he was on an HOA Board, he’d seize your condo to pay for thousands in fines he gave you a dollar at a time for having your windowbox one inch too long.
He’s an angry, empty, hateful person looking to hurt people by whatever means possible.
In other words, he’s a Leftist.
He went into acting. A much more noble endeavor than a Democrat politician.
The restaurant owner did offer to reimburse the $4. Problem is Edelman wanted triple damages and when the restaurant said no Edelman wanted 50% of bill which was 25$.
If you have time read the exchange of email at link.
I actully agree with the lawyer in principle but he went way overboard.
Also I recommend reading the Business Week article regarding Edelman and his business dealings I posted earlier.
I am of two minds on this:
1) The Harvard fellow is a jerk (in my opinion) for making a huge deal out of $4.00
2) The restaurant owner is not too savvy, for not immediately paying this guy $12.00 to go away.
I used to work at a place where any experienced employee was authorized to give up to a $25.00 adjustment on a bill, with just cause, the idea being that if it took more than 10 minutes to resolve a matter, and had to be kicked up to a higher authority, it already cost the company more than the $25.00
I recognize this is a ‘Mom and Pop” shop, but it still cost the guy more than $12.00 just to reply, and deny the original claim, not to mention the ensuing hassle.
Would you care to expand on that?
Where is the email exchange at the link? I’m not finding it for some reason
What?
The man is a complete and utter asshat.
I disagree. I have seen the exact same thing in a Chinese restaurant near me. “We are just a mom and pop business” is no excuse for screwing customers out of thousands of dollars every week, especially as they know they have been doing so for “quite some time”. I think it’s deliberate, and I’m glad someone is calling them out on it. If anyone is being an arrogant a-hole here it’s the owner. He should have sent him the 12 bucks, fixed the website and offered a free meal.
Wow!
That was torture. The twit’s behavior should have been included in the Senate Democrats report on how the CIA tortured those poor AQ Islamists.
You can tell a Harhvard man, but you can’t tell him much.
And we here are NOT generalizing from a specific. It is uniformly represented by a majority.
There is also no such thing as bad publicity. I suspect the restaurant’s business will be a little busier soon

Notice the game playing the Chinese guy started from the get go?
A normal American restaurant would never have had a problem, the first or second email would have covered it completely.
In the first email the average owner would have understood the problem and the solution, this Chinese guy chose to deliberately blow him off in the very first email, and then started with the games.
There are two critical elements to note in this story:
1. In the free market the consumer is king. Edelman was going to be refunded. Any consumer can kill a business with bad publicity. There is no need for all those punitive consumer protection laws. The market is the best protection a consumer could have.
2. Edelman is the poster boy for the elites that wish to rule us. We need a small government and a republic limited by God-given rights because of people like Edelman.
I suppose I need a 3rd item. He’s likely to sue me for writing this.
Guy is a complete tool, a very petty uhmmm...person and beyond being completely enamored with himself, a thief, who would gain pleasure by destroying another person.
Hope Hanukkah is bone dry this year, the same way he likes his food.
From the Land of Gruber.
You should have that comment pulled. You really should.
Wow! You and I actually agree on something. Did hell just freeze over? ;~}
