This "Modern Damascus" is made from several types of steel and iron slices welded together to form a billet, and currently the term "damascus" (although technically incorrect) is widely accepted to describe modern pattern welded steel blades in the trade. The patterns vary depending on how the smith works the billet. The billet is drawn out and folded until the desired number of layers are formed. In order to attain a Master Smith rating with the American Bladesmith Society, the smith must forge a damascus blade with a minimum of 300 layers.

Special thanks to the band Foreign Fields from Nashville for allowing us to use their song as a soundtrack for our documentary.

"It is a tragedy of the first magnitude that millions of people have ceased to use their hands as hands. Nature has bestowed upon us this great gift which is our hands. If the craze for machinery methods continues, it is highly likely that a time will come when we shall be so incapacitated and weak that we shall begin to curse ourselves for having forgotten the use of the living machines given to us by God."

Still have your gracious gift box on the shelf. My small forge didn’t see much use this year as my mentor and teacher Dickie Robinson passed away..... and packing up for a move to new home. Cant remember if I thanked you or not so will again . I’m on road trip again after xmas for 90 days then back home for 180 days.....new forge will be up an running by then in a dedicated purpose built shop.

I didn’t know y’all were into this stuff. My son attended a blacksmithing class last year and has been turning out some really cool knives and sheathes. He built his own forge, worked some old files into blades, worked some old lawn mower blades into knife blades, and bought some quality wood for handles.

It’s fun..... always was into fabrication and restoration thus forging was an evolution . All my life knives have been an important tool to never be without. Tell yer son not to get stuck on just knives. Tools, widgets, gifts, belt buckles, etc are where real skills are learned in my experience. Wish him well. Tet68 is the master here .....I’m just a hammer hack rookie compared to his knowledge base.

Stay Safe !!

I sent my son a link to this thread. He has been all over the net researching this topic so I’m guessing he has no problem with info. I’ve also got a brother in law who purchases old butcher knives at yard sales and rebuilds them with bone and antler handles.
