National statistics intended to track police killings show that hundreds of homicides committed by law-enforcement officers between 2007 and 2012 are not recorded by the FBI, the Wall Street Journal reports.
More than 550 police killings during that span were missing from the national count of not attributed to the law-enforcement agency involved, the paper reports. The lack of data makes it impossible to determine how many people police kill each year.
Demands for more transparency on such killings have been shoved into the spotlight after the August shooting death of 18-year-old Michael Brown by officer Darren Wilson in Ferguson. The Ferguson police department has only recorded one justifiable homicide between 1976 and 2012, according to statistics.
Some agencies tend to not report the killings, Bureau of Justice statistician Alexia Cooper told the journal. Nearly 800 agencies reported about 2,400 killings by police, while more than 18,000 other departments did not report any.

If they were not recorded as homicides by the FBI, they apparently are not homicides.
The liberal mind never ceases to confound me.
well that does it......the return of comments like burn this bish down are certain to follow
Where are the dog homicide data?
We have a tough, dangerous job.
Our brother cop did not get up that morning with the goal of becoming involved in an officer-involved shooting.
What, are you a hippy..?
Still mad about that ticket, 10 years ago..?
The key thing is for us to go home safely at the end of the shift.
Next time you have an emergency, just call the ACLU.
We have to make split second decisions youre being unfair.
Dont paint us all with the same broad brush.
Were the thin blue line, what, ya want anarchy..?
You must just be a cop hater.
I suspect that the reason 18,000 agencies did not report any homicides by police is that very few of those 18,000 had any homicides.
IMO, the national database ought to record every homicide, justified or unjustified, and every police agency should be responsible for reporting all homicides in their jurisdiction.
You do run into deaths in restraints or from “restraining” that don’t get counted as homicides even when the restraints were contributing factors - the deaths still might get recorded as accident or illness or excited delerium or some such. We had one in NJ, excited delirium with fractured ribs and internal injuries. I hope to God that man was injured before he encountered the police but I wouldn’t bet on it.
Were they ‘bromicides’?
Wow, all that stuff is true! Thanks for posting. :-P
Although the strict definition of homicide is killing a person, most people use it as a synonym for murder. Immediately the leftists and the conspiracy folks will assume all these are instances of cops murdering innocent civilians.
Funny how there is barely any notice taken when a cop is murdered.
don’t forget,
you don’t mind me looking around, you have nothing to hide, right?
So then the local police do record these homicides. They just don't report them to the federal government a.k.a Obama/Holder Central.
This is a non story.
“Police in Washington did not report any details about any homicides to the FBI for an entire decade starting in 1998; the same year the Washington Post revealed the city had one of the highest officer-involved killings in the country.
The city reported five killings by police in 2011, but zero in the following year after 24-year-old Albert Payton was killed by police while wielding a knife.”
I’m not naive enough to think all police caused deaths are ‘good kills’. But the preponderance are. Heaven help us when we become an anarchist state.
It’s becoming COMPLETELY obvious that the Administration, with the help of its media lackeys, is smearing local police forces nationwide with the aim of creating some monstrous federal police force to “solve” this “problem” their propaganda created.
Think having the federal equivalent of those white-helmeted UN “peacekeepers” in every American city.
If they were not recorded as homicides they are apparently not dead.
We already have a federal police force.
I’d be more concerned about the carrot-and-stick approach:
Washington sends big, shiny Bearcats and other surplus military gear to local and state law enforcement all over the country.
If the force doesn’t use it, or declines to accept it, then that local force doesn’t receive the nice fat check from Washington.
The local police forces aren’t victims-—every one who has accepted the “carrot” from the government has already revealed its ultimate loyalty.
Not one dedicated specifically to address the "problems" of the "folks" on the Democrat plantation, and run directly from the White House.
