When asked about recent allegations against Bill Cosby, Chris Rock fell into what for him is an unusual position. He was at a loss for words.
"I don't know what to say," he told New York magazine. "What do you say? I hope it's not true. That's all you can say. I really do. I grew up on Cosby. I love Cosby, and I just hope it's not true."
A lot of us longtime Cosby fans have been at a loss for words ever since long-simmering rumors boiled over in recent weeks that Cosby allegedly drugged and sexually assaulted women over many years. Then Rock mused: "It's a weird year for comedy. We lost Robin, we lost Joan and we kind of lost Cosby."
Yes, we have. Unlike the losses of Robin Williams and Joan Rivers, Cosby is still alive, but that's more than we can say for his comedy career or his stature as a civic role model.
The bad news for "Cos" keeps on coming.

There is a new thing.
A man and woman have come forward. He and a bunch of other people used to party with Cosby. One night he got a phone call from a woman friend who said she was at Cosby’s and needed help.
He went and pounded on the door. Cosby opened and eventually allowed the woman to leave. It’s on Daily Mail today.
I really loved the guy, he was so funny, not so much now. Sad very sad if true!
he grew up in a time when racism was rampant
The man who made allegations today said that Cosby had a steady steam of women coming through who were models seeking to get a break on TV.
It was never ending.
I’m still shocked that people are shocked about Bill Cosby. Comedians are some of the worst people in the world! Humorless, rude, you name it. Does the name Danny Thomas, Danny Kaye, etc. ring a bell? David Letterman is miserable. The only one I ever met who was kind of nice was Jackie Mason. But even with him you didn’t want to get on his bad side. The worst, by far, was Chevy Chase - what a pig!
Heard hes a jerk.
I was a telephone installer in the early 70S and did some work in his apt in his Condo on Galt Ocean Dr in Fla.Think it was 4010 Galt.
It was just after the I spy days and there were pics of him and Culp all over the place.
I asked the door guy what he was like on the way out and he said “he’s a jerk, treats the kids here like crap brushes them off wont do autographs,a jerk and don’t tell anyone I said that.”
I didn’t till now
Nope.
Look BC, I’m a woman and I love men. LOVE them. But, and a BIG one at that, they are still men.
Bill Cosby is a huge celebrity. Visited all the big Hollywood parties including the Playboy Mansion during the Cosby Show heyday. He got away with many things I would imagine because of his celebrity status.Mothers should always tell their daughters men will be men. Period.
I am wary of the rape charges. Why now? Did he tie them up and make them have sex. Geez, rape used to be cut and dry. These women could have come out sooner unless he threatened them. Don’t know what to think about these charges.
It’s amazing how FReepers are very willing to believe that Slick Willie is a serial rapist and sexual abuser, but won’t believe it about Cosby regardless of the battalion of women now coming forward. What a bunch of hypocrites!
oh no, Danny Thomas and Danny Kaye? I always liked them. Were they jerks in real life?
Right, and it’s MOST visible in the celebrity community
Where there’s this much smoke there must be some fire. No, I wouldn’t convict him on smoke alone but I also sure as heck wouldn’t let my daughter near him. This is certainly going to be his legacy. Ten years from now: “Bill Cosby, isn’t he the one who molested all those women?”
Danny Kaye - miserable, mean guy; Thomas, major lecher. No woman wanted to deal with him when he was a guest on the Tonight Show years ago. All of these guys are low class. When I went to the Tony Awards several years ago, Bill Maher was there with a hooker.
I do not understand the fascination with this situation. This old man has become a non-factor in politics or anything at all. He’s washed-up. So what?
True or untrue, it doesn’t matter one way or another in the grand scheme of things.
It is good ‘celebrity’-bashing but nothing else.
-Did he tie them up and make them have sex.
Nope. He allegedly drugged some of them.
-Hes washed-up. So what?
So what about the victims?
No such thing as illegitimate child, just illegitimate parents.
-These women could have come out sooner unless he threatened them.
Yeah and all those molested by priests could have come out sooner too - but most did not. Life’s funny that way.
Presuming these charges are true, it’s amazing it was covered up so many years.
The kind of mind that could make up good jokes can also engineer some pretty mean digs. The function is similar, the purpose quite different.
