Need advise in selecting new Dog.

My wife and I have had Goldens Retreivers for the last 20 years. We are in our late 70's and recently had to euthanize our 11yo Lady Golden. We still have a 12 yo male Golden and two adopted older cats. All of our pets are rescued or adopted.

We live in Indiana and RV travel about 4 months of the year. We are looking to downsize our Pet Family in physical size not quantity. What can our FReeper Friends suggest for our next small sized Dog (10 lbs or so).

Still protect the cat. The dog needs to be reigned in not encouraged. I had a dog and a cat too. It’s better when the cat has power.

I have a Pyrenees/Border Collie. Fantastic dog. Not spazzy like Borders can be, and not “totally above it all” like Pyrs can be. Pretty high energy and he’s big. Smart as a whip, but looks to me for direction.

Somebody dumped him as a puppy. Probably because, without direction, he was a big, undisciplined, rowdy pup.

Lol :D

Much as I love the kitty, the kitty is ruthless and quick of tooth.

Don’t worry, the dog loves her to death, I mean not literally but...she is mostly just trying to keep the cat out of where I am, but she always eventually loses that battle.

We rescued a Golden Retriever and German Shepherd mix. He must have been the rut. Face coloring and back markings like a GSD, but ears, tail, fringe on legs and butt pantaloons like a retriever. Only 45 lbs. A real lover, must be with you....but sometimes doesn’t know if he should lick or bite. Just joking about a split personality given his breeding.

He is darling, people are puzzled when I ask what they think he is. So, you never no. His breeding would suggest a weight around 80lbs.

Good luck.

Malamutes dig, chew, and need to be brushed daily once they start blowing their voluminous coats.

I think you could count most dogs as diggers and chewers at some point in their youth. I was only using them as a size example not trying to equivocate their behaviors.

We have a 10 lb mix 3/4 maltese and 1/4 yorkie. Best dog ever. Smart as the dickens and a loving lap dog. We actually have to spell words around him for certain things. He will be 11 in April.

"I have a Pyrenees/Border Collie. Fantastic dog...

That is a very interesting mix. Border collies: high energy and very intelligent

Pyrenees: Not so much!

Look at the Boykin Spaniel. South Carolina state dog. Most are 25-30 pounds, though there's a good deal of variation and you can get them larger or smaller. They were not AKC registered until quite recently - you want one that's registered on the "Blue Pages" with the Boykin Spaniel Society.

History of the Boykin Spaniel

Have less of a "spaniel" personality than most spaniels, but still soft and biddable -- but they are not a frou-frou dog. Excellent hunters and retrievers.

You need to be careful about the breeder - I can recommend a good one.

We've had 6 dogs over the years, including a wonderful golden! All the others have been mixed-breed rescues (and our girl Molly, the golden, was a "rescue" too actually - from my Mom-in-law, haha!)

Best advice: go on-line to the web-sites for your local animal shelters/rescue organizations. Check the credentials of the organizations too; there are many well-meaning rescue groups that don't really understand "matching" dogs to families!

Consider adopting an older, or even an elder dog. Puppies are great, but a lot of work!

Another female would probably be best; sometimes two males (in my experience) are too competitive, especially in "marking" territory.

You can not go wrong with the rescue dogs and mixed breeds (in my experience)...check the on-line information, especially for the older dogs (my two now are 9 and 13 - one was 2, the other 1 when we adopted them - and we were able to get "background" info. for them, like whether they get along with cats, kids, etc.)...THEN, after you find a possibly suitable new family member, go visit her/him.

Be prepared for surprises! We went to see one dog, and ended up falling totally in love with a different one! Back in those old days, we were not allowed to adopt her until she met our other dog, and came for a "home visit"...that's ideal, of course, to make sure it's a good "fit" for the family, but you can also arrange that yourself at a reliable shelter (having your dogs meet, etc.)...

LAST thing...I've always had a soft spot for dachshunds (sic) because they were our family pet growing up. Great with kids, don't know about with other dogs/cats? You might also consider a more mature (if there is such a thing) rescue Golden...not that your girl is replaceable, but they are such sweet happy dogs by nature.

REALLY the last thing: you will know the "pup" (whatever age/breed) for your family when you see her/him! Good luck! It will be a happy project, and be sure to let us know what transpires!

Adorable!!

At the moment, LOL!

Loved and lost many dogs over the years, but I would never have NOT had ANY of them...and it DOES help to have two together, it's TOO hard to have just the one when it's time to let him/her go...

So, what are you going to name him? ;)

Keep us posted about him (and his perhaps soon-to-be buddy?)!

Keep us posted about him (and his perhaps soon-to-be buddy?)!

He's 5 months old. He was named "Butch" by the "breeder." We were looking for a rescue dog initially (like our last one) but this was an unplanned "pregnancy" and Mrs. Doomonyou found him on Ebay of all places.

Anyway, he's a wiener dog cross and "Butch" ain't gonna work so he will be renamed "Bochy" after Bruce Bochy, Manager of Your World Champion San Francisco Giants. (LOL) So I'll be calling him Boch (long O). Mrs. Doomonyou mentioned getting him a buddy which was a nice surprise, so once he gets settled in I'll be looking at a nice little deer hunting dog (jack Russell) or similar to be his bud. Last couple dogs we had were a beagle/german shorthair (greatest deer hunting dog on the planet, died after 17 fantastic years. :( And then a walker hound/yellow lab who left us a year ago.

My wife and I visited our local City Animal Mangement Center this morning. We now have a 15 lb Scotty/Terrier mix 1 yo young dog on trial for 3 days.

3 hours and it looks like a perfect match.

More updates later. Thanks FReeper friends for the advise.

Happy St. Nicholas Day, my Friend!! What a nice "gift" to find this pup! (was he sitting in a shoe, by any chance? ha!)

Sending best wishes this will continue to work out...3 hours of "perfect" is a really good start!! ;)

Have a very happy evening at home with the family, and do keep us posted!
