Spacecraft Bound for Pluto Set to Awake Nine Years After Launch
KABC ^

Posted on 12/01/2014 6:13:15 PM PST by BenLurkin

NASA's New Horizons spacecraft is set to awake on Dec. 6 from the last of its 18 hibernation periods and prepare for its initial approach towards Pluto, which will take place on Jan. 15.

The spacecraft is scheduled to come as close as 6,200 miles from the surface of Pluto on July 14, 2015 -- the closest any man-made object has come to the dwarf planet.

The Orion test flight is in 3 days. I’m hoping there will be somewhere we can watch the mission. It will go further from earth than any manned craft has done since 72. (it won’t be manned this time)

The limitations of combustible fuel rockets.

What’s needed is something that can deliver constant thrust for very long periods of time.

Not only could you reach the planets in weeks and not years but you would have artificial gravity due to the thrust. On the outward journey you would have constant thrust propelling you to your destination and at the halfway point you would use the thrust to decelerate the rest of the way. Ideally, you would achieve 1G of thrust at all times for comfort.

You would have weightlessness only for a short while at the halfway point when setting up for the deceleration.

If XP was its kernal, it would explain the emails I keep getting from the Nigerian Ministry of Finance claiming to use the orbiter to transfer funds from a bank account they want me to open to hold 30 million pounds sterling for them...

Yes, the age-old question. If Goofy is a dog, what is Pluto?

If it gets there on a Saturday night, it will be a beautiful sight with all of the dwarf bowling alleys all lit up.

Currently 1.79 AU from Pluto and 31.86 AU from earth. That’s a round trip light time trip of almost 9 hours. 4 and a half out and 4 and a half back.

I USED to get these strange e-mails from the oddest places, Africa included. I switched to A&T and the strangeness stopped...at least for a while.

I was looking at this: and thinking, if the core is surrounded by a mantle of ice, methane and nitrogen frost, then really isn't the core the actual 'Pluto' and Pluto is really very very small?

It is unlikely that I will live long enough to see regular travels to the planets or interstellar travel. However, it is exciting times none the less.

Maybe not, but this short video sure paints a picture. I hope someone gets to see it!

With my luck, it’ll fly into Charon just as it makes its final approach into orbit around Pluto.

At 17:40 GMT on July 15, 2015, NASA’s New Horizons will pass between the orbits of Charon and Nix on its way into deep space, the first close visit to this icy world from an earthly herald. The blue oval at the end is the orbit of Neptune, with the sun in the distance. After New Horizons passes the orbit of Pluto, only the charcoal night side of Pluto faces the camera.
