Vanity: Need Advice on CA Health Insurance
Obama is the source of my problems ^ | 11/30/14 | Self

Posted on 11/30/2014 10:47:47 AM PST by Yaelle

I was a part of my family member's business, and as an employee of this small family business was able to get myself and 4 kids covered by a private insurance company with a great ppo plan though pricy. Every year, this coverage grew more expensive by a couple hundred a month, until this year when it has gone up by $500 a month. I can't afford it and the business will be closing in 2015.

I don't want to join CA Covered because it's ObamaCare. What do any CA FReepers do for insurance when they aren't getting it paid for through a company?

I am supposed to pay $2500 a month for 5 people. I just can't do this.

Can anyone offer some advice: how to not go to places like Kaiser but not break the bank either? I need to make the change now.

The rates at Covered California’s plans are the same as purchasing them directly with the insurance company. The main benefit to using the Covered California program is that you might be eligible for government subsidies to reduce the premium. This is based entirely on your ‘AGI’ for your family’s 2014 tax return.

The income must be greater than the Federal Poverty Line, but less than three times that amount. The greater the income, the lower the subsidy. If the family’s AGI is under the FPL, the Covered California site will automatically reject you for regular coverage and offer you Med-Cal.

at some point that is not going to be realistic or wise.

That’s True, I am on a Gamble right now hoping some Adults actually take over in CONgress and REPEAL THIS OBOZOCARE. Fortunately we are both in very good health at this Time!! I don’t really like NOT having Insurance, But I do not want “Healthcare”.

That’s wrong. No one can be denied for pre-existing conditions. Go check out ehealth.con

I figured the subsidies would stop immediately; without those insurance companies will have to raise rates or cancel policies even on those not getting subsidies. From there it will dismantle itself overnight.

Unless the R’s decide to let it stay.

Yup, the cowards probably will do just that.

I agree, Socialized Security just transfers money from the high earners to the low. Nobody paying in the max will get even close to what they paid in. And the ‘fix’ will be to cut what those people get even

If you let it implode, and I agree it would, then you are doing it on the backs of the several million people who were legitimate insurance holders pre-obama care. My premium was ~300 pre obamacare. For 2015, after the latest increase, it will be ~770. If it implodes, it will probably be >$1000. The reason “repeal and replace” is important is you need a legal path back to where we were, otherwise you are screwing millions of people, mostly small businesses and contract workers.

Thanks. Super big huge monster thanks for all the great advice you gave today. Thanks for that link. I gave them my Richie Rich zipcode which I share with billionaires galore, but I still qualified for tax deductions. They say this “lowers my monthly premium” but does it really? I have never done my own taxes so I have no clue. Are you supposed to get that amount back at the end of the year, or is your monthly payout that small?

I’m not 100% sure how the subsidy is applied. - I think you can either get an automatic monthly premium reduction, or a single tax credit at the end of the year. But if you are eligible for a subsidy, make sure you sign up through coveredCA, or else you can’t get it.

Yeah, you’re right. I wasn’t thinking of that. Obamacare has taken insurance away from so many people, as well as taken jobs away, that a path back to what they even had before may not be possible.

Like he said, it should take years to fix.

What a huge waste of money! Just the website costs alone would cover a LOT of people.

I’m sorry you were in the mix of people screwed over by Obamacare. I can imagine your frustration.

“Currently I am in the process of REDUCING my TAXABLE INCOME as much as possible in order to NOT FEED THE WELFARE CLASS. I have cut down my income from almost $200K to $75K and will go far enough to qualify for FOOD STAMPS next Year. I am doing this INTENTIONALLY.

Come January I will transfer ALL PROPERTY WE OWN into an LLC just so that I have No Attachable Assets.”

Awesome!

We are done supporting this fascist regime as well. Hubby will quit working as a compliance manager at a power plant next year. We will live off interest and savings, plus start small businesses to replenish our savings. Being self-employed, we can fund our 401ks off the top of our income, making $46k tax deferred. If our AGI is $20k, we won’t give this regime any money.

I never thought of protecting our assets through an LLC. Is that to get freebies? I don’t think i want to go that far though.

“From what I can tell, most docs will not take Obamacare. That means you will not be able to easily find a primary care physician under Obamacare. “

I think that depends where you live. In more affluent areas with good employers that provide health insurance, doctors don’t have to take Obamacare

“I have a plan I bought directly from an insurance company in california. There is zero difference if I had bought it from coveredCA. The only reason I bought directly is I didn’t want to participate or help coveredCA numbers. But the end result is literally the exact same plans. And I was getting no subsidy either way, but even if you do, you still end up with the same insurance plan, the same insurance card, from the same private insurance company.”

Aren’t the reimbursement rates to providers lower with the ACA plans?

“A way to ferret out the poor plans from the employer based plans ( beside asking for group number) is to ask if your insurance is from work.”

Ive had doctors’ offices outright ask if my BlueShield is off the exchange. I said no, but never asked why. I will next time.

“What did happen, particularly with blue cross in california, is that in order to make the obamacare defined plans work, blue cross cut what they would pay to doctors, so many doctors stopped taking blue cross. So if you were someone like me, who used to have blue cross, you either had to switch doctors, or switch plans. I switched plans.”

I think you answered my question here ;)

FYI, the plan’s out of pocket max is lower if you buy through the exchange too. That should help you out too.
