FULL TITLE: "The moment Cleveland cop shot dead a 12-year-old boy in the playground: Footage captures moment officer killed Tamir Rice after mistaking his BB gun for a real weapon"
Cleveland police have released video footage showing the moment 12-year-old Tamir Rice was shot dead by a rookie officer who mistook his BB gun for a real weapon.
The boy was shot by Timothy Loehmann, 26, on Saturday after a 911 caller reported seeing a juvenile waving around a gun - but did not know whether or not it was real. Newly-released audio showed that the 911 dispatcher did not pass on this concern to the responding officers.
At a press conference on Wednesday, authorities released the 911 call, police dispatch calls and a grainy video showing the moment the officers arrived and shot the boy.
The footage shows Rice - who the officers thought was about 20 - reaching for his waistband instead of responding to police requests to raise his hands, police said. They fatally shot him just two seconds after pulling up in their cruiser, the footage shows.

I asked, since you seem to have no situational perspective. No biggie, keep private. Good deal, sorry to be pushy. All the best to you and yours- Happy Thanksgiving!
“Either way, it was justified and he should not have challenged the police.”
He was twelve years old! How much malice could have possibly been in his heart that he willfully meant to “challenge” the police? It doesn’t appear they gave him much time whatsoever to clarify his intent.
I saw this on the news yesterday. There was more to the video. The kid was “playing” out by the street and there was a person sitting in the park who called 911. That person said it looked like it was a fake gun. The 911 operator relayed it as a real gun when speaking to the officer. 911 operator has to be fired, and the cop that shot so quick does too. Looked like he shot without even getting out of his car. In Oklahoma you can’t even shoot a deer from your pickup, much less a person.....
Hindsight in leisure provides such clarity.
Well first of all I wouldnt drive up to with 4 feet of a guy I suspected of having a gun. A little separation wouldn’t have hurt the situation.
My post was about “ situational perspective”. Maybe you responded to the wrong post?
The tsa won’t let you carry a bottle of water or nail clippers on a plane.
Our schools don’t train children to be obedient to adult authority figures any longer. And his parents seem to have been generally worthless, based on their criminal histories, so it seems likely they sure didn’t.
As much as I am leary of cops I am on their side on this. If I drive up to this situation and see someone pulling out a gun on me they get shot. My BB gun is identical to my Kimber 1911.
I kind of understand why the cop shot the kid. He had to make a split second decision and got it wrong. Those two SWAT wannabees came in much to fast and close though, making a calm assessment of the situation impossible and giving the boy no time to react to any commands thus putting themselves in a situation were a fatal outcome was hard to avoid.
In the video, the boy doesn't challenge the police officers at all.
To me, the boy was obviously a kid playing from a distance. Shooting him was a life or death situation for him, too.
That is because the media really *isn’t* against the clear abuses. They will not do anything to endanger the power of the State.
The clear abuses will continue to be swept under the rug, forgotten.
The cops only had to make a split second decision because THEY chose to pull up right on him.
That’s no way to respond to a potential threat. The only way I can imagine justification for going to the person and shooting so quick is when the suspect is using deadly force against another.
Cops simply can’t go up to a suspect that fast and force a deadly consequence situation like that.
The situation cannot be judged based on the facts starting at the point of confrontation. It must be evaluated from the point of receiving the report and each decision from there.
At a minimum they should have observed and contacted him from a safe distance so that a quick decision wouldn’t be necessary.
As a former prosecutor and present defense attorney I can say with confidence this would be a murder charge for damn near anyone doing this in Texas like that.
I assume you probably wouldn’t knowingly pull right up to point blank range on a suspect to force a split second life or death decision?
It would be different if they were just walking by and the kid reached for the gun.
But here they already knew the deadly potential of the situation and there was no reason to respond without evening giving some space for a relatively safe encounter.
I get your point about if someone pulls a BB gun, and I totally agree. But that’s not the issue at all. The reasonableness of pulling right up and giving the kid less than one second to comply or die is the issue.
This video is just baffling. I’m honestly not sure the kid even had time to register that it was police and west was being demanded of him before he could do anything.
God forbid these cops get called by a psycho Moms Demand Action activist who calls them in a panic over a shopper on aisle 4 “with a gun” who is exercising his right to open carry.
If he’s holding a cucumber when they rush him he’s dead.
'Threat': Rather than raising his hands, he puts one of his hands at his waistband
What was in his waistband? I call that challenging the police after
""being told to raise his hands""!
Good grief, lets not start ignoring what happened to make predetermined points.
Really? Well... Okay, but I don’t understand. The government (tax payers) have given them lots of money - what did they do with it?
And the cop chose death.
