Out of the gaping mouths of Coast Guard and Navy Landing Craft, rose the great flow of invasion supplies to the blackened sands of Iwo Jima, a few hours after the Marines had wrested their foothold on the vital island. 1945.

45th FS - Lt. Ceil Dennis, atop Mount Suribachi on a July evening in 1945, looks out over the 21st Bomber Command installations and the ships anchored near the shore of Iwo Jima, Bonin Islands.

Same scene almost 65 years later

Great picture. My dad commanded an LCT on Utah Beach, and was XO on an LST on the way to the Pacific when the war ended. I think he was actually in the Panama Canal when the announcement came.

Jim Beckwith in "Squirt" of the 47th FS, 15th FG leads a group of P-51's from the 45th FS, 15th FG over Iwo Jima March 7, 1945

When the planes first approach the airstrip on Iwo Jima, Bonin Islands, they are still flying in formations. The "pitch out" one by one as they fly a hundred feet or so from the ground and then, individually, they do an almost vertical twist into the sky. You can see the first plane of this formation "pitching out" in this photograph. The "pitch out" gives each plane a lot of distance from its neighbor. Then they circle around and come in to land one by one. This is a vital safety measure to prevent jamming on the strip.

So much for global warming, compare the shoreline of the two photos 65 years apart of the beach shot from Mt Suribachi. Looks like the ocean has receded rather than risen. Tidal ranges for Iwo Jima are not that large.

I’ve become a WW2 addict, I wasn’t sure why, your statement here made me aware why: THIS WAS WHEN MEN WERE MEN. I can’t stand these metrosexual, feminist, politically correct, times we’re in.

My dad was a lifer in the Army, 2nd Armored Division under George Patton.

Mine too. I tried to find a model at the Air & Space Museum, but they didn’t have anything. And .. I’m not into putting together a model.

Also, several years ago, I think it was the history channel, told a story of a lost squadron. They landed in the artic, and eventually it was buried under tons of snow and ice. A group of people dug one of the planes up (a P-38), and it was in perfect condition .. except for a lot of rust. They actually excavated the aircraft .. cleaned and restored it, and then FLEW IT. While watching the film, I couldn’t help but wonder if my dad and/or his brother had been involved in creating that aircraft. As it took off and flew as if it had never been encased in ice for years; I got all teary-eyed .. and then I couldn’t help but wonder if my family had actually been involved with this aircraft. It was weird.

Out of the gaping mouths of Coast Guard and Navy Landing Craft,

While Coasties were brought to the Pacific to help as landing craft drivers, I don't think any of the landing craft were theirs. They were all Navy.

Landing craft such as these were for amphibious warfare, the "gator" Navy and Marines. The Coast Guard has never been part of the War Department, or Department of Defense as the Navy and Marines are. Amphibious warfare is not the Coast Guard.

Had a Watch Engineer who was in the first wave on Iwo as a BAR man. According to his estimate he lasted seven minutes, his ammo humper was KIA along with most of his Platoon.

He was the mellowest man I have ever met, nothing bothered him, Met his wife, a Nurse, who tended him on the Hospital Ship. His son was a VN Marine Vet.

My buddy, Russell Galaspie (mainly some southern coon ass indian) was also very mellow. He slept on his screened in porch all year long no matter how hot or cold. I never saw him excited but there was always the sense that there was a strong force of will lurking under the calm exterior. I’ve been blessed to have made the acquaintance/friendship of a handful of folks who were in various campaigns of the war.

America could not win a new war like this. Not today—not with the PC, Metrosexuals, Liberal traitors, etc... American troops with toss down their guns if they had to fight. America will be in a hard place if we have to fight Russia or China (or Both). It will be a year of defeats before we can re-capture our edge— then it may well be too late. Better learn to speak Russian Comrade—Da!
