Had a Watch Engineer who was in the first wave on Iwo as a BAR man. According to his estimate he lasted seven minutes, his ammo humper was KIA along with most of his Platoon.

He was the mellowest man I have ever met, nothing bothered him, Met his wife, a Nurse, who tended him on the Hospital Ship. His son was a VN Marine Vet.

My buddy, Russell Galaspie (mainly some southern coon ass indian) was also very mellow. He slept on his screened in porch all year long no matter how hot or cold. I never saw him excited but there was always the sense that there was a strong force of will lurking under the calm exterior. I’ve been blessed to have made the acquaintance/friendship of a handful of folks who were in various campaigns of the war.
