A student at Marquette University, a Roman Catholic institution in Wisconsin run by the Jesuits, says his philosophy professor that he was not allowed to express his view against same-sex marriage in her classroom.
The student, speaking to The College Fix, said that MU philosophy instructor Cheryl Abbate told her Theory of Ethics class that "gay rights" was a settled issue because, unlike issues such as immigration, civil rights and the death penalty, everybody agrees on this, and there is no need to discuss it.
The student, who asked to remain anonymous, challenged Abbate, telling her he thought the issue deserved to be discussed, and that dismissing arguments against gay "marriage" and gay adoption because of her personal views set an inappropriate precedent for the class.
Abbate then told the student that some opinions are not appropriate, such as racist opinions, sexist opinions. When he insisted on his rights to free speech, he said Abbate told him he did not have a right in this class to make homophobic comments.
She then invited the student to drop the class, telling him, In this class, homophobic comments, racist comments, will not be tolerated.
The student said he filed a complaint with the associate dean of the College of Arts & Sciences, Susanne Foster, who referred him to Nancy Snow, the philosophy department chair, but they not only failed to address his complaint, but warned him not to talk to Abbate in a disrespectful manner.

Actually, the Inquisition tended to be a Dominican turf (Fra Tomas de Torquemada, OP) and occasionally a Franciscan one (Cardinal Jiminez). I suspect that tales of assassination of monarchs are apocryphal. Most Jebbies have deposited their balls in a leftist lockbox since the mid-1960s. Regrettably, they are not alone in that respect.
I don’t think it’s picking a fight. It’s stating the truth. To clarify my position, I was raised RC so it’s not a case of someone with no knowledge of the faith simply bashing Catholics.
I watched my own parish go liberal. My wife’s (before we were married) had the same issues. Years of teachings went out the window and a more ‘adjusted’ set of doctrines took it’s place (Upstate NY).
Now I look at the Pope. This guy can’t get anything done outside of socialism.
BE, You know I have the greatest respect for you. But this is one issue that burns my ass more than RINOs. I left the church not because I think I’m smarter than the hierarchy, but because I can read and I can sit in a pew and hear for myself words twisted out of proportion, Doctrine tossed aside to satisfy agendas and now the did he didn’t he say X routine going on in the Vatican every time this guy opens his mouth.
I have nothing but love for Catholics that remain true to the faith. But that faith is no longer the faith being taught by the church. Today, the Church IS the Democrat party. It functions like it, it supports it, It supports those policies, it refuses to correct itself on any number of issues and it demands you/we fund it.
Thats the truth. It sucks, but it is the truth.
I realize that they think they can call themselves Catholic.
It’s more wondering how, or why, the Catholic church either lets them continue to call themselves Catholic, or doesn’t take some action in straightening them out.
Well, that’s the best explanation I’ve seen yet by far.
Thanks.
Funny how cash flow factoring into it doesn’t surprise me.
[Romans 1:22-25] Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, 23And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things. 24Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves: 25Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.
Does she have a “wife”?
everybody agrees on this”
Apparently they didn’t ask me.
James I might of had an argument with that assessment of Jesuit threats
One of my favorite Harry Chapin songs.
Two of my Jesuit professors(1972-1976)were outspoken communists.
Bump
Just guessing but I suspect that Cheryl Abbate is queer.
...sigh...too bad...assuming I were younger (a lot younger, like thirty five years younger), and several cans of beer were available, having my way with her might be enjoyable...
What I’d call the formerly Catholic institutions are now fully secular having the same liberal faculty as anywhere else.
...is there some distinction you know of between ‘secular liberals’ and ‘Jesuits’...?
...care to share it with the rest of us...?
Today, the Church IS the Democrat party. It functions like it, it supports it, It supports those policies, it refuses to correct itself on any number of issues and it demands you/we fund it.
...except why limit your rant to the Church...why not include the even more headlong rush to leftist ruination by the largest mainline Protestant congregations...I mean, if your point is to engender a diatribe, make it a worthwhile one, with all the proper targets in your sights...
Are you just being obtuse? One can find Jesuits anywhere on the politcal spectrum, though I will sadly say they are clustered on the left side.
There are even entire web blogs devoted to this phenomenon.

Because it was a factual statement/s made in context that has nothing to do with all the strawmen you mentioned perhaps?
In your rebuke, you failed to point out any actual inaccuracy with my post. Probably because there is no inaccuracy to point out. So instead of diverting the issue, why not address it with church leadership and stop the people leading the Catholic church even further leftward.
Unless of course you want that. But one thing you don’t seem to get is that I want the Church to BE the church and not another tool of communism/the left. I want it to return to being the rock it was intended to be. If you think thats a bad idea, and if you think that it too should become “Superfunrockband’ church with all the trimmings and trappings of other denominations, have at it. They seem to think liberal/gay everything is swell.
If on the other hand you see a problem with the direction The Catholic church is moving and has been moving for decades, then why are you arguing instead making your displeasure known?
Mainline Protestantism led the charge tot he left when the CoE voted in article 16 to allow the use of artificial contraceptives at the Lambeth conference in 1929.
That was the beginning of the downhill slide and we are ALL reaping the rewards of that decision with aborotion on demand in every state of the union.
In your rebuke, you failed to point out any actual inaccuracy with my post. Probably because there is no inaccuracy to point out.
...I offered no rebuke to you...I simply posited a suggestion to view modern religiosity in its totality, instead of simply venting all your spleen on the few...
If you think thats a bad idea, and if you think that it too should become Superfunrockband church with all the trimmings and trappings of other denominations, have at it.
...you sure can read a lot about a person from a short response...
If on the other hand you see a problem with the direction The Catholic church is moving and has been moving for decades, then why are you arguing instead making your displeasure known?
...I despise the modern church, and am getting more pleasure than I should from saying so to everyone in my parish...the priest is unhappy with me, which tells me I’m doing my job...but, aside from grumbling, what am I going too do about a church that values ‘relevancy’ above ‘worship’...?
though I will sadly say they are clustered on the left side.
There are even entire web blogs devoted to this phenomenon.
...I guess those websites are being obtuse as well...
May God continue to bless you and yours and the good work you do here!
God bless you and yours!
