Word For The Day, Wednesday, November 12, 2014-- scrutate
In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
scrutate [SKRU-tayt]
verb, transitive
To investigate.
Origin: From Latin scrutari (to examine). Earliest documented use: 1882.
USAGE:
"Philosophers have too often thought that they can learn more about human nature by scrutating the murky depths of substance and faculties than by interpreting the obvious evidence." John Lachs; The Relevance of Philosophy to Life; Vanderbilt University Press; 1995.
Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.
That was funny......”that’s why we need a fourth freezer!”
Yeah, that’s why I find it odd that blacks from the south say it too....how did that happen?
gotta say EYE-EARN sounds gay to me.
I can hear it fine. Anyone else out there who can or can’t hear my Post #76?
Is that because you are in Virginia or did you pronounce it that way near Pittsburgh?
I liked when he said about her misplacing her savings card that they were gonna be like THOSE JAGS up front trying to plug in various phone #s trying to remember which one they used.
They say “ont” for your mother’s sister, but they say “ant” for the tiny insect.
I didn’t change my patterns of speech when I moved here, I don’t think. my entire family, here and the Ohioans, say those things the same way.
I even checked to make sure I had my sound turned on.
I’ll go either way on pecans.
My husband has worked all over the U.S. at various times - he would keep me laughing at different terms for tools or machinery - in the area of Minnesota and Wisconsin they call the small tractor type equipment a “skidster” - we call it a “bobcat”. Also everytime my husband would say “tower” they thought we was saying “tire” and he does NOT say it that way - but just his accent came across to them as “tire” same with “oil”, they thought he was saying “all”.
I heard it
Yeah - lol. Just before we left PA they built a giant eagle. I think the locals were just calling it Giant
I could do so much with that statement, but I will be nice. ;^)

The only thing you had to change was to stop calling it “Virginia ham” and just call it “ham.” ;-)
Haha -
Tower/tire would be the same in Pgh, same with POWER, pahr.
not sure what Virginia ham is, I never called it that anywhere.
