Ancient viruses regenerated from 700-year-old frozen reindeer poop

Viruses preserved in ancient samples provide valuable information about viral diversity from long ago; they help us trace how today's species evolved and study their biology.

However, it is not easy to recreate ancient viruses. Even when they are preserved in ancient specimens, they are somewhat degraded and their concentrations are low.

Now, a new study led by the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), shows how it is possible, using modern techniques in the field of molecular genetics, to recreate ancient viruses from cryogenically preserved materials

What a relief.

Next to climate change, a shortage of viruses is one of the greatest threats to our continued existence on this planet.

Hope they are careful with all of this. Reindeer takes a blank hundreds of years ago, and the viruses are in it???

Years ago I read how scientists were able to get viable samples of the Spanish Flu virus by opening the graves of Inuit people who died from it back in 1918.

Wonder how many frozen graves still contain smallpox and other nasties.

If this virus infects Rudolph and the other reindeers on Christmas Eve, I’m going to be pissed.

Why would someone devote themselves to regenerating a virus?

One can never believe public heath officials, including medical professionals. It is their job to lie to the public for the “greater good.”

So, when they tell us that smallpox and other nasties can only be transmitted in such and such way, blah, blah, blah, the be4st course is to assume it is a lie and proceed with caution.

Just because they can, doesn’t mean they should. Kinda scary.

Well, the viral loading remains suspect until they can determine if the sample is Reindeer Copro-lite or Reindeer Copro-Classic.

I have it on good authority that Michael Moore was regenerated in the same fashion.
