Stop taking selfies with bears, hikers warned

Hikers in Sierra Nevada are being told to stop taking selfies with the wild bears.

The worrying and very real trend has seen visitors to South Lake Tahoe, California, put themselves at risk to get a share-able snap of themselves with a bear in the background.

Hikers have got as close as a few feet away from the wild bears, and officials have now been forced to send out an official warning.

(edit)

A recent visitor at the site said she saw dozens of people taking selfies with the bears, who were unafraid of the group.

‘There were like 30 people taking pictures of themselves with the bears,’ Manutsawee Buapet told ABC News.

‘They weren’t scared at all of the people and one bear cub came as close as two feet to the tourists.’

FWIW, the bear photos in the story were NOT taken at Tahoe. The bears are grizzlies and there aren’t any in CA.

Story would have been a lot better if they’d included a couple of the selfies in question.

” But bears acclimated to humans as a result is a real problem. They’re more likely to intrude on inhabited areas, or approach tourists/visitors with food, etc. No good can come from that. “

Bear rugs are a good thing.

Oh yes just the place I'd want to be at for certain. "Oh look honey a baby bear I think he likes me". Said Doofus while approaching the cub right before the sow 20 ft away lunged and ripped him wide open exposing gray matter.

I used to go to the Smokies and drive around Cades Cove. All the enjoyment ended when village idiots began trying to see how close they could get to the bear for a picture. Generally if a sow bear {black bear breed} won't leave if you yell GIT OUTTA HERE you'd best look up in the nearby trees for cubs. Then you best back away to a much safer place.

After seeing this awesome leep, I changed my mind, camera or no camera.

I escaped once in Maine when mama bear and cubs that I wanted to photograph didn’t show up.

What the heck was I thinking?
