I noticed that the US Navy commissioned the USS North Dakota, but that it was "SSN" and not an SSBN, meaning it doesn't carry ballistic missiles.
When did they start applying STATE names to. SSNs, which used to have city names, since only ballistic missile subs carried state names?

Probably has to do with not building any more BB’s.

Don’t know, but given what I think today about most cities, I’d say naming after states is a good option. There have been some impressive ships with State Names.

New VIRGINIA class SSNs a few years back. There is very little naming tradition left. We had CGNs named for states too in the 70s.

Fast attack subs are named after cities... “Boomers”, Nuclear Missile subs are named after States.

Yep...I remember..... But to me, you just can't beat an Arizona, an IOWA, or a MISSOURI.....
I sure would hate to be on ship carrying the name USS Jimmy Carter......if they ever want to name a ship for our President, I suggest USS Obola.

I think that under Obola the vessels to which you refer will have crews that are entirely “transgendered”,in keeping with our Navy's newest, and most important, mission.

Speaking for myself, I would be uncomfortable and cramped riding in a submarine. I'm almost 6'4 and I'm quite sure my head would hit of lot of objects as their ceilings are quite low.

I sure would hate to be on ship carrying the name USS Jimmy Carter...How about the USS Lewinsky...able to go down at a moment's notice?

Fish don’t vote. Senators and Congressmen do. Name a ship after their state or one of their presidents and it will be funded.
To: LS
If I remember correctly some ssbn’s were converted to cruise missile launchers but got to keep their state names as ssns.

"Subs used to be named after fish."
I can see it now: "In deference to cultural sensibilities, the latest Hunter-Killer submarine will be named after the State Fish of Hawaii":
The USS Humuhumunukunukuapua'a.

Your suggestions give a new meaning to 'Hot Bunking".
Just saying...

I know there’s a joke there some where.
For some reason it makes me think of BJ Clinton.

Operation Petticoat One of my faves, even had several future stars Gavin MacLeod, Marion Ross and Dick Sargent as well as veteran character actor Arthur O'Connell on board. Loved that they kept in one of the best gaffes in movie history, when at the end one kid says Cary Grant's real name rather than the character name. As W.C.Fields bemoaned, acting with kids and animals is dangerous!
