No single experience had a greater influence on my path in life than that of seeing this movie when it first came out, in 1968, as an eighth-grader.

No single experience had a greater influence on my path in life than that of seeing this movie when it first came out, in 1968, as an eighth-grader.I'll repeat that for myself, with a few alterations:
No single experience, other than Christ's salvation, had a greater influence on my path in life than that of seeing this movie when it first came out, in 1968, in Tokyo as an eighth-grader.

The future was in the heavens and we squandered it... If there is one thing I wish to see again - it is for humanity to reach for the stars, instead of grovelling before a self imposed guilt trip.

Saw it with my cub scout pack. No claymation monsters so it bored the h*ll out of me.
Haven't seen it since. It'll be interesting to see how it looks to me now.

The last movie I saw in the theater was “Lawrence of Arabia” (1999, Egyptian Theater in Hollywood).
This will be the next one.

I clearly remember seeing it in 70mm Cinerama, and being just blown away. The digital restoration is fine, but they’d better not disturb so much as one of Kubrick’s pixels!

Great posts guys, thanks for posting this thread ES!
I saw this movie too when it first came out, I can’t say it changed my life, but the beginning is truly wonderous.

I can’t believe I saw the same movie as everyone else.
Other than “The Andromeda Strain”, I thought “2001” was the most over rated movie ever.

...
2001 initially bombed. Some people in Hollywood walked out of the premier. However, after a bit of time, it started to catch an audience, especially with younger people, including children. It’s one of the best movies ever made, though it can take some work to understand it and to appreciate how groundbreaking it was for its time.

What...you didn't understand the profundity of apes dancing around a humming monolith?
"Mad" magazine did a parody on this flick entitled "2001: A Space Idiocy."
I related more to that.
