On one side, there are dilapidated houses, gardens overflowing with weeds and a high crime rate.
On the other, there are streets filled with spacious homes, well-manicured lawns and yoga studios.
This is one of numerous fences that have been erected by the wealthy 'haves' of the Michigan suburb of Grosse Pointe Park to 'prevent 'have-nots' from Detroit from driving into the city'.
The brick barrier, reading 'Road Ends', represents a significant divide between the two cities, which despite their proximity, differ greatly in terms of average salary, crime rates and general desirability.

I think the fences are between the Do’s and the do not’s.
Having grown up near there, I’m familiar with the areas where one side of the street is nice and the other is ghetto.
I once thought about buying a house in what was then a nice Detroit neighborhood. It was a block from grosse pointe. The house was at least 3500 square feet, very well kept and modernized. $35,000 (25 years ago). If it had been a couple blocks over, the price would probably be 10 times that. Chose not to pursue it. Nearest grocery store was 10 miles away and nearest ghetto was 2 blocks away.
Good for them.
Can we build a fence around Ferguson, Mo?
The divide is not between “haves” and “have-nots” but between makers and takers.
I rarely say anything but the one hit me between the eyes
Works for me. In more ways than one.
I have a "friend" who is a good gooder no profit type. She drinks too much and talks about the plight of these under privelidged kids and the horrible conditions they endure. (abuse, neglect, addiction, etc).
When I tell her, all the money in the world can not undo what happens to kids like this. Sure, I hate it and I wish it weren't so. When I ask her how much is enough? Would 98% of my paycheck be enough--she can't give me an answer.
She only answers back, "Well, what are we going to do with them?"
My repsonse? "The only thing we can do--build stronger gates and higher walls"
Both sides of the fence would look a lot nicer if it wasn’t illegal to pick up trash and mow the lawns on the poor side.
Those racists!!!!! They should be sharing their prosperity instead of building walls. I’m sure they could have the losers-in-life’s-lottery live in their spare rooms, eat their fabulous dinners and generally hang out. Are they selfish or something? How disgusting.
Chicago does this but that’s ok.
One of the alleged barriers is blocking a road obviously under construction.
Right. I noticed that. Temporary yellow barriers.
Brit newspapers seem to have an odd habit of doing hit pieces on American communities.
Used to live in Los Alamos, where the first Bomb was built.
About once a year the local paper would reprint a Brit article about the guilt all inhabitants were oppressed by, how tumbleweeds blew through the streets, and the general air of oppression.
At the time LA was a really odd place, but none of the articles ever made any attempt to describe the reality, which was actually much more interesting than their preconceptions. They came to LA knowing what they would find, and by golly they found it!
Suspect this is similar.
lol That’s pretty good!
That wall/fence will keep the cars out but it won’t keep people from climbing over.
I’m a white Christian woman who was on Welfare cash assistance for three years. I also was on food stamps during that period, as well as for two other shorter periods.
Actually they don't. The "Pointes" each have their own police forces because they are separate communities from each other.........
The only noteworthy community which MAY have their own security is Indian Village. But I've never heard of any such claim....but that's not to say they don't considering their location and the value of their houses and the Detroit movers and shakers who call that area their home........
I do feel sorry for all kids who get bused for “diversity.” They’re pawns in a stupid game.
Mexican town? LOL! I play softball with a fellow retiree whose son and his family live down there.......THEY LOVE IT!
There’s a nice park there in Mexicantown.
Mexicantown, Corktown, Briggs. That whole area WSW of downtown area is really starting to look pretty decent these days. Lots of development going on along the riverfront in both directions.
