FULL TITLE: Woman who had no idea she was pregnant gave birth to twin girls after going to see the doctor for a stomach ache
An Iowa woman had an eye-opening experience last week when she went to the doctor for a stomach ache and gave birth to rare twins in the hospital hours later.
Shelby Magnani and her fiancé James Croskey of Ankeny, Iowa had no idea Shelby was six-months-pregnant with one child - let alone two.
Ava and Anna were born by C-section last Thursday weighing just four and three pounds each.
Not only was Shelby pregnant with twins, but she was pregnant with a rare form called monoamniotic twins who only have a 50 per cent survival rate because they share the same placenta and sac which can lead to complications, reports Whotv.

What happens more than people think? Girls not knowing they are pregnant?
She had TWINS in there and didn’t know? I could hardly MOVE when I was carrying twins. I had to give up driving because I couldn’t jam myself behind the wheel anymore. I mean, just how enormous do you have to be in the first place not to notice that you have a waistline of about 50”?
fiancé, code for shack job.
“Girls not knowing they are pregnant?”
My cousin is a nurse. She could tell you stories like that all day.
There must be some FReepers here in the health care industry with a few stories of it. It happens all the time.
This woman was only six months along plus her twins were monoamniotic. Some one here is going to have to fill us in on that that is.
Yep. Former NICU nurse here. It’s not a rare occurrence, even with twins.
Well, I am perplexed.
If some don’t know they are pregnant, don’t recognize the signs, such as missed periods, I don’t know what to say.
Just looking at that word without opening a dictionary, I would say Mono-Amniotic means twins being carried in the same amniotic sac inside their Mommy’s tummy, I mean uterus.
Some women don’t miss periods during pregnancy. Or some women’s periods are so irregular that it does not make a difference. That whole “missing a period” does not apply to every woman. The only way to really know if your pregnant is to take a pregnancy test. Or have an ultra sound.
The article doesn’t state whether the mew mother needed an explanation as to how she got pregnant in the first place. Maybe a doctor told her ‘what happened’, post coitus, of course.
I had a friend whose daughter, never suspecting to be pregnant, went to the bathroom one day and surprise, out came a baby! (She was big-boned)
It was not more than a few weeks later that I saw her again with two babies in carriers - and they were good sized babies. I have no idea where she hid them!
I am sure you have noticed how many truly huge women there are these days.
It seems bizarre, but I can imagine some of those honkers could be pregnant and not know it under all that mass.
But, judging from the size of the babies, she was more than 6 months pregnant. They look good.
To my younger, male FRiends—over the years I have found it to be sound personal policy to refrain from asking a woman if she is pregnant, unless you can actually see the baby’s head beginning to crown.
This is a really interesting story. It almost sounds like if she did know she was pregnant and was hovered over by doctors, they may not have survived, if you know what I mean The mom does not look large, She is blessed and the babies are beautiful. Mazel Tov!
“The article doesnt state whether the mew mother needed an explanation as to how she got pregnant in the first place.”
Dude, if she has to ask, she’ll never know.
Like women who are to thin, women who are to FAT may not have regular periods. So you could miss a few, or have lighter than normal ones. If you did not get the usual pregnancy signs of sore breast and puking your guts up, you might not notice it until someone kicking started to happen.
Most of us are not that lucky, sick from week 1 until 3 days before birth on #1, the other 3 were the typical 3 months. I was so small with the last, no one (outside family) but me knew I was until the last 3 months.
Wow, those babies are so lucky! Most moms pregnant with mo-mo twins spend a good portion of their pregnancy being monitored in the hospital. Prayers for them..
I don’t know how she could not know she was pregnant. When I was pregnant with twins, it was so obvious from the get go.
