From Press conference live right now:
The 2nd person who contracted ebola was wearing the full protective gear as recommended by the CDC!
Wow!
ping
Frankly -the doctor answering questions looked alarmed - even scared.
“Stop the flights from West Africa!”
—
Well worth repeating.
Obama, we mush stop the flights now.
Wow. I wonder if even this will shake the Government out of its stupor? The odds are getting better, but less than 50%.
The Reston Ebola strain did not affect humans, just monkeys, but it did infect by airborne means. It never infected any of the dozen or so people who worked there caring for the monkeys. These workers wore no special protective gear (other than what was needed to protect against monkey bites), and they carried monkey carcasses and cleaned the cages of the dead monkeys.
So they are in full damage control mode. Which will get panic going
Yes they repeat the CDC talking points. In a matter of 60 seconds they say this newly infected person was wearing all the gear and then when reporter asks the question he said that staff IS safe as long as they wear this protective stuff.
What is more important than a press conference to the nation on the facts of the first ebola transmission within the borders of the US?
Stop the flights from Dallas. Seriously, people are going to run
More important question - did the person go to the state fair?
Everyone looked panicked to me.
Does not inspire confidence.
They likely have it by now and are being hidden from the public to prevent panic. Remember they were being quarantined in a private home at an “undisclosed” location. I am doubtful we will ever hear from them again.
They also sealed off the 24 bed ICU
Yes, the flights must stop. Too bad the 150 per day (last guestimate I’ve read) have already/currently continue to come over.
I have a ticket to DC.
Update at 8 a.m.: Officials have announced that a Dallas apartment complex on Marquita Avenue has been decontaminated. We are working to confirm the address.
Neighbors in the area, which is near Greenville Avenue, have been notified that a person with Ebola had been living near them, officials say.
The health worker who has contracted Ebola was not in the group of people public health workers had identified as being at high risk of exposure to Thomas Eric Duncan, the first person to die of Ebola in the United States.
The health care worker had been self-monitoring for signs of the disease and had not come to work for the last two days.
The person’s car was decontaminated and the common area of an apartment complex in the 3700 block of Marquita was cleaned by a hazardous-material team. The team will be cleaning the interior of the apartment Sunday. There is a pet in the apartment.
Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings has confirmed that neighbors in the complex and the neighborhood around it have been notified about the Ebola patient.
Remember
The CDC recommends N95 Mask For Ebola That Stops Things 3 Microns In Size (aka .3).
Ebola Is .08 Microns (YES that is a 0 in front of the 8).
This needs to get out before more people can possibly be infected.
I don't get it either (meaning, I'm not sure), but here's what I think:
The attack rate among doctors and nurses is HIGHER than in the general population. This is an important clue that needs to be explained.
Doctors and nurses wear PPE. The general population doesn't.
The PPE gets contaminated during routine care. When they take it off, they're getting a few virions on their skin.
The ID50 is TINY.
So, even though touch is the way most people in Africa get it, HCWs PPE is collecting the virus and making touch exposure more dangerous. I wonder if increased skin temp under the PPE has something to do with it? Lots of viruses are highly temperature adapted, for example, flu loves 34 degrees instead of 37, which makes the tip of your nose just perfect.
All that is speculation. What is reality is that the dominant paradigm in the industry just got blown up and we are moving into a phase of real, serious crisis, which will be accelerated by the flooding of our borders with refugees from Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Guinea, most of whom are incubating disease (not sick yet), and who will therefore sail through the screening.
