LEON, Spain A 25-year-old Spanish woman drowned after becoming intoxicated by fermentation gases and falling into a wine barrel, Metro reported.
Nerea Perez, a vineyard worker in northern Spain, reportedly had been stirring wine while it was fermenting a lengthy process that allows the wine to come in extra contact with dead yeast grape bits.

“Don’t be afraid to stick your nose right down in it!” Isn’t that what they say at wine tastings?

CO2 poisoning. Not a nice way to go. Wasn't drowning the actual cause of death?
To: dware
Well... there’s worse ways to go...
and worse things to drown in, for sure.

Something similar happened to a friend of mine. He worked at a brewery and fell into a brewing vat and drowned. They said they didn’t think he suffered though, since he got out three times to go to the bathroom...

Should have been white wine.

“becoming intoxicated by fermentation gases”
Uh, that should be “asphyxiated by CO2 fermentation gas”.

I believe CO2 put her in the barrel. Byproduct of fermentation. She may have drowned as a result.

CO2 poisoning. Not a nice way to go. Not nice at all. Besides drowning, the CO2 contributes contribute to global warming.
