Recent Mars Images (Marvin the Martian throws down the kaboom in a guest zot)

Posted on 10/08/2014 10:49:46 AM PDT by aardwolf46

All over the internet recently, sciFy vs. reality and a Mars satellite for petty cash:

That breaks the monopoly. Faced with the spectre of other nations publishing uncensored Mars images, NASA and JPL have started publishing some much more obvious images than they have in the past including a totally uncensored video (JPL) showing large-scale structure.

A few items...

JPL uncensored video showing large-scale structure:

Electrical device of some sort with helical coil wound around it
Device is on the left, about a third of the way down on the image

Gear of some sort.

Wheel - axle device

Raw NASA/JPL image:

Metallic container with handle

Mechanical work appeals to many. Once one understands the basics, it is a satisfying activity.

Keep in mind that solving your existing problems does not prevent new ones. Don’t blame the mechanic for things he didn’t break.

I know how to do the work I just don’t have a place to do it. Pretty sure my landlady won’t appreciate me pulling an engine apart in the front lawn.

All along the Watchtower ...

Don't need a Watchtower... It's been years since the Vikings raided.

Besides, I'm not a JW...

It will be prudent to let the work be done in a garage, but there is no need to get ripped off. Go to the rednecks, and tell them you came to them because you have red hair.

Keep in mind you're dealing with a boxer engine here so labor is like double. If one head gasket is toast, time to change both of them. Timing belt, serp belt and all that stuff that has to be removed to get to it should all be replaced. And they probably will want to machine the heads.

Any reputable place should sugest the above, since the labor will be the biggest part of that bill and if you only do a partial, you will soon be doing the other side..

Depending on the shape of the vehicle and the mileage you got before it toasted, figure with redone head gaskets it will get another however many thou miles. (Head gaskets fails are notorious on Subaru's, especially the 1998-2006(?) vintage, usually at around 125k miles give or take. Don't know if they have 'fixed' it in the latest models or not.)

Anyway, having it done right by someone you have to pay to do it (as opposed to doing it your self) should run you more in the vicinity of $1600 unless the labor rate down in those southern parts of Joisey is a lot more expensive than up in the lumpy part of the state where I took mine (in the shadow of the Highpoint monument).

I chose to fix the head gaskets on my '98 because the body and everything else was in good shape, and if I get a second 150k out of it I come out ahead.

Your mileage and comfort zone may vary.. ;-)

And whatever you do, DON’T go to a dealer.

Unless you have a secret gold mine..

At times like these, ask yourself, “What would Elon Musk do?”

He’d probably saw New Jersey off from the rest of the states, and float it down to North Carolina.

This doesn’t help your situation, but it might give you perspective.

Mine is a 2003 with 151k on it right now which leads me to believe that someone has already replaced the head gaskets on it before I bought it with 130k or so on. Still trying to find some maintenance records in hopes that I won’t need to spend $1600. The gaskets aren’t blown yet but I would rather not wait until they do.

Back from the doctor. C5 and C6 have “BOY! Do you have arthritis in your neck!!” kind of arthritis. The FAX came back after the 6th phone call. The other cervical vertebrae are affected, but not to quite such a degree, and the next step is the epidural, BUT: It may be January before I can get into Pain Management clinic.

Meanwhile, I’m to take Ibuprofen because that’s what works. Duh.

It was raining VERY hard when I came home and I’m glad I don’t have to go anywhere. I will eat some soup and then head for bed, but I wanted to get caught up here, first.

I’m excited to see Mt. Charleston again. It’s going to be very pretty for a couple of days! And we may get more rain in the next week. Right now, I can’t even see the lights in the valley.
