Recent Mars Images (Marvin the Martian throws down the kaboom in a guest zot)

Posted on 10/08/2014 10:49:46 AM PDT by aardwolf46

All over the internet recently, sciFy vs. reality and a Mars satellite for petty cash:

That breaks the monopoly. Faced with the spectre of other nations publishing uncensored Mars images, NASA and JPL have started publishing some much more obvious images than they have in the past including a totally uncensored video (JPL) showing large-scale structure.

A few items...

JPL uncensored video showing large-scale structure:

Electrical device of some sort with helical coil wound around it
Device is on the left, about a third of the way down on the image

Gear of some sort.

Normally, yes.
But a Darksheare induced pillar of fire is “unnatural” I am told.
One has a shadow at a distance of a quarter mile.
(Ask NoC as he did see this spectacle and can attest to my pyro skill.)

Ask NoC...

At least that time the rocks didn't ignite...

We were worried about the tents though..

*cough*
The rock burning (twice) was NOT my fault no matter what my brother says.

The tents didn’t get too much of a heat pulse from my beam of fire.

Event security was a bit, um, heated though...

...the rocks didn't ignite...

I know, right? I hate when that happens.

And when they blow up I hate that too.

If I'm not expecting it.

Only after you said to knock the fire down some.

NoC is referring to a five ton boulder that kinda sorta caught fire in my vicinity.
(The pillar of fire campfire I made did not ignite the rocks of our fire ring because they were metamorphic rock, not sulfur bearing stone or sedimentary stone. Thankfully.)

The five ton boulder?
Sulfur bearing stone.

Wow, we’d have a popular Cub Scouts program if you guys were around ... for a short time before they pulled our charter and sent some people to jail.

Once upon a time they rewarded the ability to create a fast hot single point heat source capable of being cooked over.

Which describes none of my, er, pyromancy.

The settings rocks on fire thing would be really fun. I wonder if it would work on the rocks around here ...

Depends on the rock composition.
Sulfur bearing rocks will burn, stink, melt, dribble, flake spark etc.
Certain shales and slates bearing organic material will light up, shatter, and burn.
Some pebbly looking conglomerates aren’t, they are concretions containing phosphorus (spelling? Meh, tired) compounds.
So the results of a campfire can be interesting.
Especially if you are known and prone to making HOT fires that can light fiberglass on fire reliably.
(Not that I have done that. )

Which kitty is Bill and which kitty is Lovecraft?

The dancing one must be the one inspired by Lovecraft.

I’ve promised myself a baby basement cat if and when I get better and I will name it Pyewacket. Getting a cat is the only thing keeping me sane.

Although I wouldn’t mind a marmalade kitty

That’s Bill, showing off his perfect coat while other cats make fools of themselves.

As to the better cat for you, consider the color of your furniture ;-).

"Getting a cat is the only thing keeping me sane."

You want a cat for your sanity. 'Face thinks it will lower her blood pressure.

Hmm.

You two must have had really bad experiences with doctors.

My choice is always a marmalade but this time, I have a black on order. All I have to do it go get it, but I have no litter, box, food or toys for it. Poor homeless little thing.

I hope you start feeling VERY well, very soon! I’m still praying for you.

...You two must have had really bad experiences with doctors.

The last time a saw a particular doctor, my BP was around 170/90. He decided he was going to keep me for a while to see if it would come down.

I had an appointment that morning in about an hour, and I had other things to do before I went. He came back in and the BP was 223/110. He wanted to give me a shot of something and I told him I was outta there. (Did I tell you I don't like this particular doctor?)

So this time when I went, it was down to 135/72. Gotta be lower, but it's better than it was.

I have two cats. My blood pressure is quite low. And I’m completely sane.
