Recent Mars Images (Marvin the Martian throws down the kaboom in a guest zot)

Posted on 10/08/2014 10:49:46 AM PDT by aardwolf46

All over the internet recently, sciFy vs. reality and a Mars satellite for petty cash:

That breaks the monopoly. Faced with the spectre of other nations publishing uncensored Mars images, NASA and JPL have started publishing some much more obvious images than they have in the past including a totally uncensored video (JPL) showing large-scale structure.

A few items...

JPL uncensored video showing large-scale structure:

Raw JPL video:

Electrical device of some sort with helical coil wound around it
Device is on the left, about a third of the way down on the image

Gear of some sort.

Wheel - axle device

Raw NASA/JPL image:

Metallic container with handle

You mean me? Oh. OK.

What was that middle thing?

No, “Huh?” is the reply to someone speaking into the radio saying, “Roger.”

Well, THAT’s a scary dream! Then The Elusive One would have some serious competition!

I woke up before anything happened. We all know it’s possible, of course.

Now I have a sinus headache. I think I’ll make a cup of tea, and then maybe I’ll take Pat shopping for potatoes and really big foil pans.

What was that middle thing?

Just the dangly bit from the infinite improbability drive...

...but you need some advanced tea substitute, or other suitable source of Brownian motion to activate it.

Don't panic, advanced tea substitute is readily available from your Sirius Cybernetics Nutrimatic Drink Dispenser..

I think it’s great that Pat wants to make potatoes for the hungry. THAT is comfort food, for sure! Who gets to make the gravy? I’ve gotten so lazy since I have no one to cook for. I used to make mashed real potatoes to go with the roast, and then make real cornstarch gravy to go with that.

Now I buy the boxed potatoes and packets of brown or turkey or chicken gravy that only make a cup. And even then, it’s over-kill.

Walmart has the really big foil pans...it’s getting close to Thanksgiving, remember?

Good question about the gravy. I’ll email the coordinator.

They said they need more turkey, too, so I’ll get some turkey breast.

I have a couple of those in the freezer if you want me to DarkFAX them to you.

I don’t know how I ended up with two, but eventually, they will get used.

And now, I’m going to go take a much needed shower.

Enjoy the shower! I’ll get a can of gravy, and if it’s not needed on Saturday, I can donate it at the Knights thanksgiving collection.

The too-sweet-to-be-believed Mrs. Scoutmaster never knowingly inconveniences anyone about anything at any time.

That trait comes from my MIL's family line.

Start with an American man who feels called to the mission field in Rhodesia at the age of 20. Both of his wives (first one killed by a drunk driver), missionary nurses. He meets the first one on his initial boat ride to Africa and they marry during the passage.

He spends more than 65 years in the mission field, then returns to the US when he has weeks left to live, to meet his grandchildren and great-grandchidren. Lung cancer, the asbestos type. During those 65 years, he built countless churches, schools, medical clinics, etc.

Ten children, one a boy. Those children? Five years in the bush with missionary parents, years in a strict British boarding school for missionaries' children with summers and holidays back in the bush doing missionary work.

Sent to the US to finish high school and attend college, living with and on the dime of the very wealthy BIL, husband of the missionary's sister. To complicate the already odd upbringing, the missionary's sister, who is the 'mother' to finish HS and college, is a woman of another age. Servants. Always in white gloves. Button-up shoes in the early 50s. Etiquette classes for the kids in which they learn about oyster spoons, pastry forks, sugar spoons, fish knives . . . all of which is confusing, because US placement sometimes differs from the British placement they were taught in boarding school. Debutantes. Formal dinners with courses. Oyster spoons and pastry forks. Introductions made to young men in the proper fashion.

Cultural whiplash for the missionaries' kids. Most are too soft-spoken to hear when they speak. The sweetest and most caring people. All free time spent in volunteer work. None will ever knowingly inconvenience anyone (one inconvenienced you all the time, but she spent her life as a nurse/missionary in Rhodesia and never developed the basics of social interaction). All scatter-brained to the extent it's a constant joke among them and their spouses.

So that's where my MIL came from, and that's where Mrs. Scoutmaster gets it.

FIL? A farm boy. Salt of the earth. Worked with his hands as a boy, as most of my family lines did throughout life.

The shower was excellent, thank you!

Why didn’t I ever think of buying canned gravy??? *duh*

Now I’m waiting for my hair to dry, and I’m going to take some Ibuprofen because my right leg hurts. I want it to feel better so that I can walk tomorrow, cold though it will be.

I think I’m living on Ritz, now, since they go with so many things and don’t cost a lot of points. Besides: they taste good!

Right now I want to sit in the recliner and crochet (using up yarn, ya know) but it is full of stuff to be sorted once again. One one think I would reach the end, but now what I need to do is pick a day when my back feels good and begin to scan photos and documents. The printer/scanner/copier is at such a height that I can only use it by standing up, and that means I’m only good for about 20 minutes at a time.

Still, I have to do it. Wish me luck. I’ll never be able to afford a Neat Desk scanner, and that means the scanning will take a while. There are just so VERY many family documents that need to be saved and sent to the siblings, kids and other close relatives. I need to get it done.

I love reading about such people. I would love to have been one but I squandered my youth doting on my children instead of teaching them to serve others.
