Can Ebola become a winning issue for Republicans?

Republicans have taken the first tentative steps in politicizing the Ebola case in Texas, as the president left them a clear opening with his dismissive attitude toward the disease and belief that it would never come to America.

But caution should be taken in criticizing Obama since a serious outbreak would create a backlash against the GOP for trying to capitalize politically on tragedy.

Republican lawmakers are accusing Obama of underplaying the threat. They say the national response to the discovery of an infected patient in Dallas has been woefully inadequate.

“I am concerned about it, and it’s a big mistake to downplay it and act as if it’s not a big deal,” Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) told conservative radio host Laura Ingraham. He said Obama officials are putting “political correctness” ahead of public health.

Conservatives, meanwhile, are hammering Obama for saying two weeks ago it was “unlikely” that Ebola could ever reach America.

Texas health officials on Thursday said they are now questioning about 100 people who may have been exposed to Ebola, with four people placed under quarantine, as they try to prevent a wider outbreak.

It will be interesting to see if the Republicans start playing hardball just like the Democrats do. But I'm betting the GOP elite would like Harry Reid still Senate Majority Leader next Congress than to cede any territory to the Tea Party-backed wing of the GOP. And, thus, Karl Rove, Mitch McConnell, John Boehner, Paul Ryan, et al. will sabotage any efforts for the Tea Party wing of the GOP to wrest control away from the usual elitist suspects i.e., inside-the-Beltway Republicans./rwa

They should approach it obliquely. Talk about “things feel like they’re not going in the right direction.” Talk about how “people are becoming uneasy at the way things are going.”

They should talk about what needs to be done, and pass a resolution.

If those things aren’t done and things go bad, the Dems will take a hit.

If the shoe was on the other foot (I.e., Republican president) you Know the Democrats would be talking about this 24/7.

After all, it was the Democrats who said “never let a crisis go to waste.”

Fortunately as a private citizen I’m under no restraints.

I wade right into the idiocy of the Ferguson chatter on twitter and tell them outright that the democrats are going to let Ebola burn through poor minority communities to rile them up and keep them voting democrat.

Then I back it up with links showing republicans warning about the dangers of open borders and runaway immigration.

They should try to be helpful and assist the JV team in fighting this threat. Let Rush and the rest of talk radio make the connection between the outbreak and incompetance and open borders.

Maybe. If they plan on quarantining anybody who isn’t me, then it might be a winner. That seems to be the consensus here on FR.

No Ebola isn’t a winning issue, but VOWING TO LOOK AFTER AMERICANS INTERESTS FIRST is very much is.

It and many of the failures of Obama can and will be used to elect GOP (or right minded Blue Dog Democrats who can see the truth).

Republicans don't have the spine to play this for what it's worth.

Democrats are trying to infect your schools with ebola, Enterovirus 68, chikungunya, Chagas Disease, and resistant TB. Maybe even another Breslan massacre. They want open borders and diseased schools for the potential votes.

No, I don't anything along these lines happening.

Well, okay, seriously, take some genius strategy from the movie, "Head of State." Just use the slogan, "Obama likes Ebola!" Use it often, and before you know it,...
