Australian Meteorologists Caught Fudging Numbers

The Australian Bureau of Meteorology (ABM) was recently forced to admit it alters the temperatures recorded at almost all the official weather stations in Australia. The ABM came clean on its temperature fiddling largely because of the fierce scrutiny of Graham Lloyd, environment editor for The Australian and The Weekend Australian, who published a series of articles on the ABM’s number-fudging.

Using a process it calls homogenization, ABM has replaced actual temperature measurements with massaged numbers. ABM claims anomalies have arisen in both the historical data and current measurements due to a wide variety of factors unrelated to climate, such as differing types of instruments used, choices of calibration or enclosure and where it was located, and the closure of some stations and opening of others. The ABM argues such factors justify homogenization of the numbers.

Critics point out a much worse anomaly in the homegenization process: Almost all the alterations resulted in higher temperatures being reported for the present and lower numbers for the past--with the higher numbers being used to demonstrate a historical warming trend--than the numbers that were actually recorded. Downward homogenizations in recent years were rare. In some areas, downward temperature trends measured over time showed a significantly increased temperature trend after homogenization. The difference between actually measured temperatures and homogenized temperatures topped 4 degrees Celsius over certain periods at some measuring stations.

This is perhaps not surprising, since on ABC radio, January 3, 2014, David Jones, head of Climate Monitoring and Predictions at ABM, stated, “We know every place across Australia is getting hotter, and very similarly almost every place on this planet. So, you know, we know it is getting hotter and we know it will continue to get hotter. It’s a reality, and something we will be living with for the rest of the century.”

Someone must have sent out a memo. In the last 2 weeks the weather station of a trendy town near where I live has started recording high temperatures which are 7-15 degrees higher than surrounding towns and Wunderground’s forecast. 102 degrees on a cloudy day when surrounding towns are at 87 degrees is highly suspect. And the town is on upper Tampa bay whose water is 84 degrees.

Question for some knowledgeable science-type Freepers....

Global temperatures as far as climate change is concerned, are tracked to 0.1 degree celsius...exactly when did modern temperature instruments become capable of measuring to that tolerance?

Further, exactly when did those close tolerance instruments and their measurments become reliable through regular calibration practices?

Global warming/climate change has made weather folks a lot more important than they would otherwise be. They have gone from the nerdiest to some degree of sexy cool. They very much have an interest in promoting this crap.

I do wonder how arrogant these reporting agencies are that they don’t think they will be exposed.

Jigging Global Warming temps re where the sensors are, has been a game for a long time.

The link below tells about the location of the sensor on the roof of the Santa Rosa Press Democrat, a liberal N. Californicator newspaper owned by the NY Slimes.

Here is the Santa Rosa weather station – on the asphalt roof of the Santa Rosa, California Press Democrat Davis building!!! Talk about a heat sink? The person looking for the weather station said this: “In traveling around California and Nevada to look at NOAA USHCN climate monitoring weather stations I’ve seen some odd things. I’ve seen temperature sensors near asphalt and concrete, sensors placed within feet of buildings and cars, sensors placed near air conditioner exhausts, and sensors that had barbeque grills in the vicinity.

Last Friday June 6th, I traveled to Santa Rosa, CA to the Press Democrat Newspaper, a wholly owned subsidiary of the New York Times, which according to NOAA, has the climate station of record for Santa Rosa. But nothing prepared me for what I was about to find at the Santa Rosa Press Democrat.

When I arrived, I couldn’t locate the NOAA MMTS sensor anywhere around the building, but I did see a tower on the roof of the building, and in the rear of the building they had a Davis Vantage Pro2 weather station on a pole. I knew that wasn’t the official climate temperature sensor provided by NOAA. So, after doing a perimeter search twice, I went inside to inquire within. Everything in the lobby said “go away”. I guess it was the bullet proof glass, and the cameras, and the security guard. After getting a name of the person responsible for their weather page from the front desk, I called on my cell phone, no answer.

Undeterred, I decided to try looking outside again. It was then I noticed the 5 level parking garage about a block north.

From the top of the parking garage a quick scan with my binoculars located the NOAA MMTS temperature sensor. It was there, about 8-10 feet above the roof, surrounded by a sea of air conditioners and exhaust vents!

Apparently, some left wing ITs working with/for wineries in a two county area, use this site as their official site which can determine a lot of actions. If reasonable people at those wineries ask why they don’t use local sites or their own in their vineyards, their comments are ignored.
