[Vanity] "Mulaney" ... Really? An Astonishingly Laughless "Seinfeld"
FOX ^ | 9/20/14 | FOX

Holy cow! After the football game, FOX showed a preview of their new sitcom "Mulaney" ... named for the stand-up comic who stars. Never have I seen this kind of preview that had not ONE laugh. Not ONE. And the set-up is a blatant "Seinfeld" rip-off. Completely fake interaction amongst the characters. WHAT a disaster. Very sorry Martin Short is peripherally involved here. HE's the real deal. This show looks bad on so many levels.

I tend to be the same way. The last thing I generally care to watch is anything having to do with druggies or dope-pushers. I have such a strong, visceral revulsion towards them both. Same thing with any kind of teleplay involving child molesters. Both topics can very conceivably lead to a good drama, aesthetically speaking, but they just dredge up too much anger and hate in me to really allow me to get involved in the story.

Yet, I can’t deny I watched an old “Untouchables” episode the other day, which ‘did’ involve the unsavory activities of a drug kingpin. At least it had the satisfying ending of presenting the said gentleman appropriately perforated like a pin-cushion via a hail of bullets.

That’s funny. I’ll have to check it out.

You know, clever is funny. Vulgarity for a laugh, is just vulgarity.

I’ll look for it. Sounds good. Often think about how fun it would’ve been to have filmed just the everyday stuff of growing up....to watch, now.

Adam Goldberg must have been a little toot growing up - there is a lot of yelling "turn that thing off" on the tapes! Then him giggling...

The Mom in the story is very involved in their lives and says some hilarious things like "my yummy boy" - so we have picked up some phrases from the show and I occasionally say that to my 23 year old son! lol

George Segal plays the grandfather (mom's dad) and he has some great lines too

I just bought the entire Get Smart series on DVD. That will block a whole lot of bad television.

I’m probably one of the few Americans that didn’t fall in love with M.A.S.H.

M.A.S.H. rule of thumb:

The early episodes with Col. Blake (McLean Stevenson) as the base commander are good. But Stevenson left the show after the third season, and everything went downhill from there.

The show lost a lot of its irreverent wit, and became preachy. I believe that was because Alda was given more and more control over the show as time went on.

“Seinfeld” doesn’t seem to have aged as well as “Frasier” which never goes out of style, even today.

IMHO the last good grown-up sitcom was “Just Shoot Me” but I do enjoy “The Middle” on Hallmark.

Its funny, I usually find out about the good ones when they are about over... I’m always late to the party.
