TMZ, Howard Stern Show star in Goodell press conference circus

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell’s press conference did not allay all the concerns that fans and the general public have about the league’s handling of domestic violence. But the press conference did feature some strange situations.

For starters, a reporter from TMZ, which broke this whole issue open by publishing the now-infamous video of Ray Rice punching his wife in an elevator, asked Goodell why the NFL couldn’t find that video. Goodell didn’t have much of an answer. This was their exchange:

TMZ: “You suspended Ray Rice after our video. Why didn’t you have the curiosity to go to the casino yourself?”

Goodell: “Well, two things. We suspended Ray Rice originally after seeing the original video that was disclosed in February. When the second video came out last week, that’s when we increased our discipline because that was inconsistent with the information we had. It was new information. One of the things that I said in my statement, and I said repeatedly here, is that is part of what we want to do with all of our experts, outside, internal, is try to figure out, How should we investigate these issues? In the past, we have been almost completely reliant on working with law enforcement and cooperating with them. We do not want to interfere with an investigation. And particularly here when you’re dealing with a casino in New Jersey there are even more restrictions because it’s overseen, I believe, by the attorney general. So we have to be very cautious not to interfere with an investigation, but we’ll evaluate that. Should we do more to get that information? I would have loved to see that tape. Should we do more to get that information in the future? That’s a question I want these experts to do.”

TMZ: “Mr. Commissioner, we found out by one phone call. You guys have a whole legal department. Can you explain that? We found out by just one phone call.”

Goodell: “I can’t explain how you got the information.”

An even odder spectacle was the sound of a man screaming from off camera while Goodell was at the podium. TV viewers had no idea what was happening but could hear the man yell, “What are you doing? Don’t take me to an elevator! Please, don’t take me to an elevator!”

That man was later revealed to be Benjy Bronk of The Howard Stern Show. That portion of the press conference is below:

Goodell, your league is being Alinskyized. Get your head out of your rear and stop feeding these trolls. This is not about domestic violence, it's about the Left destroying a beloved sports institution that has made many people wealthy, created side jobs, promotes civility, and community pride.

It has made blacks wealthy and famous who otherwise would have been shot dead in the streets or ended up in prison.

It is all a bunch of BS. This is pure politics and a red herring. Keep your eyes off real problems and this fiasco is not one of those. Wake-up folks and smell the roses.

I agree - but what should Goodell do when being Alinskyized?

No kidding - check the cover of this week's Time magazine. The campaign to kill football is fully out in the open now. Goodell's appeasement is just throwing scraps to the wolves who want the NFL dead and gone.

That speech/press conference was the biggest load of PR doublespeak/nothingness I’ve ever heard. As someone said, Goodell checked all the boxes and then walked away. I frankly don’t care what the NFL does about “domestic abuse.” As far as I’m concerned it’s a law enforcement matter, but don’t go all community organizer/social worker/ family therapist and then take a hike. And why hasn’t the issue of race come into this conversation. like it does everything else? After all, the perps are predominately black.

Sports are bad because they encourage competition, a will to win, and the incentive to be strong so as not to be run over by the weak. Those are things that used to be celebrated, but not anymore. Today everyone is encouraged to do as little as possible, enjoy their 7th place trophy, and sponge off of their parents until they are close to 30, at which point they can turn to the government to help them get through the rest of their lives.

A ‘Stern’ review, even by Howard’s “standards” is in order, but maybe not by jesters and jokers.. And posers.

Nice strawman. The issue isn't about the relatively miniscule percentage of players who are criminals in the NFL; it's the fact that said league is successful and is being destroyed by Leftists.

No strawman. Athletes have always had their priviledges. Now it is much worse. This is about the coverups of the crimes these thugs commit.

He should have stuck to the initial 2-game suspension for Rice and then internally worked with the Player's Union and their players for their input, instead of letting leftists flock to him like sharks to chum.

Perhaps if Goodell was willing to do the right thing when his players commit acts of criminal violence, the left couldn’t touch him or the league.

If it’s a relatively few number of players, then it shouldn’t be a hard act to end the careers of those who commit serious acts of violence, shouldn’t it?

“it’s the fact that said league is successful “

in no small part due to its tax-exempt non-profit status and special exemption from the anti-truest laws obtained by insertion of special words into a foreign aid bill ...

The NFL has had criminal scumbags since the leather helmet days.

Ask yourself why all of a sudden, it is a concern now and you have corporate sponsors pulling their support.

It's because Goodell and the game is being targeted by leftists. They don't care about victims of domestic violence or the boorish behavior off the field. They want to destroy the league and it's sad to see most FReepers accepting their narrative

No joke. The NFL supports tens of thousands of jobs outside of football, namely the sports bars, concerts, security, etc.

I live near Green Bay WI, and without the Packers this town would shrivel up and die.

Ending the careers of these players is going to help victims, how?

Look, Ray Lewis may have killed someone. No one uttered a peep. Ray Rice beats his fiancé up, and the sports and political world goes nuts.

Obama says he doesn't want his kid playing football if he had a son. Many Mothers are pulling their sons from Pee Wee and Pop Warner leagues.

Open your eyes and realize what's happening. Liberals don't like football because it promotes civic pride, community, and togetherness. No doubt that after 9/11 when football resumed, they were quietly seething with rage at the unity among Americans.

If football is destroyed, what's to stop the Left from going after hunting? NASCAR? All sports in general because some people win and some lose and that's just not fair waaah?

You don't get it

I thing it’s interesting that those same Freepers who would rather have a Democrat win because their Republican candidate is only 99.995% pure is willing to accept, and even celebrate, the worst acts of humanity of their hero football players because he can throw a ball.

How about having the similar standards for the NFL?
