Which translates to 0500 Eastern, which is when I start work. As a transmission reliability coordinator.
Could (or not) be an interesting day!
Latest on Space Weather
Radio emissions from shock waves at the leading edge of the CME suggest that the cloud tore through the sun’s atmosphere at speeds as high as 3750 km/s. That would make this a very fast moving storm, and likely to reach Earth before the weekend. Auroras are definitely in the offing. Stay tuned for a more detailed forecast in the hours ahead.
Run a 500mw Peaker.
We get a call from the RTO anytime an X class flare is heading towards us. What made it interesting was we got the call 10 min after the flare was observed. That and an M class flare is plowing the way for its bigger brother. It doesn’t happen often and directed at earth
If the best case happens all we see are some auroras, worst case breakers trip, protection relays fry and transformers short out during the spike on the lines.
Milliseconds
Should make for a great light show up here.
Your GSU’s are the most vulnerable.
From Space Weather on earlier CME
“Most of the storm cloud is heading north of the sun-Earth line, but not all. A fraction of the CME will deliver a glancing blow to Earth’s magnetic field during the early hours of Sept. 12th. In the past few weeks, glancing blows from minor CMEs have sparked beautiful auroras around the Arctic Circle. This CME could spark even better displays. NOAA forecasters estimate a 79% (not a typo: 79%) chance of polar geomagnetic storming on Sept. 12th”
Looks like this one is moving faster. It was thought that an earlier CME had weakened the “path” and allowed the Carrington Event CME to travel faster.
Question: any opinions as to effect of both of these arriving about the same time?
Not running now. The back feed xfmrs are energized. One of them is under load at all times.
That’s the reason for the warning. The place could go black quickly. We have no black start or isoch control either.
Are you talking small transformers, or the ones that take months to replace?
So will you guys spool up for the event?
Thanks, I figured the answer to that question would be useful for many.
The timing of the two isn’t helping, but to put it in perspective, the 1989 Quebec event was an estimated X15 flare. It was a series of CME’s /flares
The Carrington event was magnitudes higher that Quebec.
It wasnt known if the Carrington event had precursors.
The generator step-up transformers are rated at 220mva each 18kv/138kv.
Not more than a football field away is a hub. Their xfmrs are 1000mva.
They do have a couple of “used” spares on site and grounded out. Wouldn’t matter though, if the protection relays and breakers are inop transformers are not gonna help much.
These take a year or more to build. Less if it’s just a rewind.
Then it falls back on who can get their generators back online, but if the transmission is down....
The RTO has a “plan” to bring the grid up, but that’s assuming all the parts are still working.
Only if the demand is there.
Low voltage, need for MW’s or reliability.
If any of the larger nukes or coal plants go down we can help make up the shortfall.
If they island the grid, they’ll need you
I have to have a back feed for my generators, starting, excitation and BOP systemS, I can’t synch to a dead bus. Some plants can, we’re not set up to do it.
“outside of a faraday cage”
I built the entire lower 1500 sq ft of my home as a Faraday Cage back in the early 1990’s. I saw what was coming with the earth changes, even explained it at a few conferences in detail and everyone just laughed at me.
Took me many days just to weld all the rebar together at every crossing point. It’s in ground, in 12” thick poured concrete walls with a 6” thick poured concrete ceiling composed of steel bar joist on 16” centers, steel bridge decking, wire concrete mesh wired to the rebar cage, fiber mesh, and then built a house on top of it.
I built it this way for a heat sink for solar heat and put an R-40 insulation under ground on the outside between the cement wall and the ground to keep all condensation away.
Was a fun project. Hope I never need it.
This is being caused by the earth’s geographic and magnetic axis coming into alignment thus reducing the dipolar field strength created by the dynamo effect within the earth. This is in turn decreasing our earth’s magnetosphere at a time when the sun is in transition to a reverse polarity shift in opposition to the earth’s dipolar field. Yes, opposites do attract.
Since the sun reverses its polar field about every 11 years, it is in reverse polarity shift to earth about every 22 years. However the alignment of the earth’s poles only happen about every 2,000 years(the amount of time it takes for the magnetic pole and the earth’s core to make one cycle of moving away and back to alignment with the geographic North Pole. Thus the perfect storm alignment is 1/22 X 1/2000 or about every 44,000 years on average.
This stuff came to me in a vision a long time ago... It’s the reason we are in these troubling times.
For you masonic folks, the sacred geometry of this is that the human soul is also a dipolar field and the shackles have come off as we are in the springtime of soul growth. The spin field of the masculine and feminine aspects of the human soul match the spin directions of the earth and the sun respectively. This is the reason that Peter says what he does in Acts 2 in the Bible when he quotes the OT prophet Joel about the new found abilities of our children and our manservant and maidservants. It’s happening.
We are moving into the process of the squaring of the circle. This is the reason people have changed so much in the past 50 years. High divorce rate, equal & civil rights,.....
“A solar storm will not generate an EMP that can impact electronics - so no need to build a faraday cage for this event.”
RFEngineer, you are missing a few variables in your calculations....
The worst of these flares are nature’s EMPs, and they will have similar results if they hit earth.
