The man who drove his SUV through the front entrance of a mall in Jersey City and crashed it into a vacant store Sunday night told police he "was unsure what happened," according to the accident report.

The 83-year-old from Jersey City was taken to Jersey City Medical Center-Barnabas Health after the accident and was placed under observation for a short time and then released, hospital spokesman Mark Rabson said yesterday.

The crash occurred at 5:47 p.m. Sunday at the Hudson Mall on Route 440. A video of the crash does not show the initial impact at the entrance, but it shows the SUV rolling down a corridor as stunned shoppers scramble to safety. The SUV is seen crashing through a wall, where it finally came to a stop.

My 83 year old business partner drives all over the place for managing his investment properties and doing charity stuff. Goes to parades all over Maine with the Shriners.

Yesterday, he stopped by the building I am working on with his dump truck to pick up a couch someone left by the dumpster. He and I lifted it up and over into the back and he drove off the the dump with his load of roofing debris, bricks, etc. that had been loaded in the truck over the last week or so. I have ridden with him and have no problem with his driving.

Only if you ban soccer moms with cell phones. They are more menacing.

An 84-year-old man was not injured Monday when he drove his car into a pool at his daughter’s home in Wyckoff, police said.

The Cliffside Park man arrived at the Joshua Lane home on Labor Day at 1:21pm. After driving to the end of the driveway, he may have mistakenly stepped on the gas instead of the brake, police said.

Might have been a mini-stroke which tend to occur as we age even if driving skills are still sharp. Don't know if testing can predict them, probably not. Still, I would imagine more people get killed by teenage drives than old ones. Hard to kill anybody at ten miles an hour(mall speed.)

Not likely, the deterioration has been a slow and noticeable only to me thus far. As someone who spent over 30 years as a police officer and paramedic, I think I would have notice a stroke. LOL! But, who knows?

Mayhap I just one of the few oldsters that will admit that I’m not the hot shot I once was and am willing to take a drivers test periodically to prove I’m not a menace on the streets. Just say’n

Yeah, Says me!
“Most drivers are above average?” No way! I see someone do something stoopid or inconsiderate behind the wheel everyday!

You do know that when people are jumping, when you drive by, they aren’t jumping for joy.

I crossed the crosswalk, when some old guy, drove through as if I wasn’t there. I would have been a hood ornament if I hadn’t been so quick.

I made him call his family or I threatened to call the cops.

Why does everyone pick on old people whenever 1 of these stories come up?

Why not question the skills of teenagers? (BTW, notice which age groups are penalized by insurance cos).

Why not question those of us young adults and middle aged?

After all, about equal parts of accident stories are all these.

“You do know that when people are jumping, when you drive by, they aren’t jumping for joy.”

I’m a very good, careful driver. I’m 68, been driving cars since I was 16, but Karts since I was 12. I’ve never gotten a ticket, except for parking. In Milwaukee, you couldn’t avoid parking tickets!

I’m 76 and feel confident behind the wheel or would not drive. The ability to drive as one ages varies widely from individual to individual.

If people don’t like the way I drive they should stay off the sidewalk.

“I’m 76 and feel confident behind the wheel or would not drive.”

Yup! My very spry Grandma drove until she was 90. No problems at all, except that she was very conservative and drove kinda slow. She was a very well-known water-color painter, and drove all over Akron to paint. Great reflexes and a great, sharp mind until the end of her life. We convinced her to stop driving when she could barely see over the steering wheel. But if I’d modded her seat and pedals, she would have had no problem. She never had even a slight fender bender in her whole driving life!

Nor are the Mercurys, Pontiacs or Plymouths in either...(or, Nash’s, AMCs, Saturn’s or Peugeots)
