Research led by Rutgers University concludes that ethnic minorities tendency to be more obese than other populations could be caused by hurtful messages and stereotypes that diminish motivation to stay fit.
Rutgers-led research finds that exposure to hurtful messages might diminish motivation to lose weight, an article about the research posted on Rutgers website said.
According to the National Institutes of Health, obesity rates are significantly higher among members of several minorities including Hispanics than for the general adult population, the article said in a photo caption.
Rivera said that these negative messages range from those promoted by the entertainment media to comments by teachers and parents.
Rivera concluded that American-born Latinos might have lower self-esteem than more recent immigrants suggesting that stereotypes ingrained in U.S. culture are especially potent and that the design of his research reinforces that view.
The article stated that aside from race, the people used for the research were similar in every other way where they lived, access to healthy food, and income levels.
Rivera suggested in the article that positive racial and ethnic role models could be beneficial.

“Hurtful Messages Could Contribute to Obesity in Minorities”
And here I thought it was from eating too much. Silly me. Who knew messages had calories.
Oh...good grief...as someone who is not white...the assumptions/theories brought forward in this article are more “hurtful” and “demeaning” than anything someone can say to you. The idea that we are so weak is insulting...
Pun intended.
You can say that again. Most mornings my bathroom scale trash talks to me in a coded numerical message.
What "hurtful messages" specifically are they referring to?
Do the media, Hollywood, teachers and parents routinely use slurs and other hurtful language against minorities? If they do, I sure don't hear any of it.
Dang, if I wasn’t a pasty white guy I could blame this ~70 extra pounds on someone else.
I agree. It is very insulting. I would imagine many minorities get a kick out of white guilt and the only reason some of them don’t say anything about how insulting these “compassionate” idiots are is because they get freebies for going along with it and voting Democrat.
So it’s the name of a football team and not the lard in a Navajo taco that’s the culprit!
It's whites who get "hurtful messages" all day long. Not only that everything is their fault, but they're portrayed as dumb klutzes or burglars in commercials, they're constantly told that their evil ancestors stole land from the Native Americans and oppressed blacks, they hear things like "white bread," "blue-eyed devils," etc. Try looking at any Internet comments about minorities, for instance. You can see the products of our public schools, openly and viciously bashing whites. They've been taught to do so; they've been taught that this is okay. In our oh, so sensitive, politically correct world, where you're a horrible person if you "offend" any nonwhite, white bashing is perfectly acceptable. But of course, nobody is going to wring their hands about how this might affect whites. Whites just don't matter anymore, and nobody cares.
Someone, somewhere, sometime, probably called them fat crackers, and they started eating heavily to assuage the pain.
+1
They’re fat because they have no family structure, so nobody is cooking healthy meals, they just get junk food.
Too much food, too little work, no exercise and too many excuses could be contributing to obesity in minorities.
Feed them arugula!
I load trucks for Big Brown at age of 56. I do it for the Teamsters cadillac health plan and my pension(My sweat equity). I also work a day job in IT. I keep a flat belly and a sharp mind.
I don't have a cell phone, but I have a wide screen and pay 70 more dollars a month for cable since Obama came in to pay for the free phones and cable for the layabouts.
