Google has announced it is developing next generation quantum computer chip as part of its plan to enable machines to think like humans.
The internet company's Quantum Artificial Intelligence team, together with researcher John Martinis and his team at the University of California, will create the super-fast chip.
They will work on a hardware initiative to design and build chips operating on sub-atomic levels, making them exponentially faster than processors in ordinary computers.

The article was from yahoo, so it can be assumed to not really understand the issues at hand.
Quantum computers are faster, but only when doing parallel computations. Any linear computations will not be any faster (possibly slower, but it depends on the hardware).
I’m not exactly sure why a quantum computer is supposed to be better for AI myself, but admittedly that is not my field.
The reason people should be concerned about quantum computers finally working is how easily they will crack current security algorithms.
Azimov was a bit short-sighted in positing his “Three Laws.” To simulate human consciousness, machine intellects will need to be endowed with free will. Any “laws” that human makers attempt to superimpose are likely to then have all of the force of a human conscience; in short, not much.
We must figure out how to simulate pain and pleasure in a machine’s consciousness, and then permit these forces to shape machine experiences into a range of emotional responses. These feelings are likely to produce some form of ethical values. Without such a mechanism, artificial consciousnesses are going to be dangerous.
Being that most humans are freakin' insane (Obama elected twice), is this such a good idea?
Well, if they use a liberal brain as the basis of “human thought” this ought to be an easy task: Liberals are brain dead stupid.
Do you mean the ‘Turing’ Test?
:)
This is future epic fail
The last thing we need are computers with OPINIONS and their own thoughts.
“I can’t do that Dave...”
"Bidi-bidi-bidi...you suck, Buck."
I’m waiting for the day a robot does plumbing...
The inventor will make a fortune. He will need it to escape all the men who find themselves suddenly divorced.
</ sarcasm>
We must figure out how to simulate pain and pleasure in a machines consciousness...
...and the only quibble I have with that is the word "simulate". It will have to be real pain and pleasure. Because we're not going to be programming this thing, we're going to be raising it. We already do with these strange things called babies. Never could see the attraction myself but the ladies seem to like them... ;-)
Whatever. Google is also working on microdrones to auto-deliver packages to your doorstep.
Actually this is what he said.
I can remember waiting for plumbing. Things change.
Before that, we will engineer semi-organic brains that grow in a lab and can interface with machines.
You should be more careful about saying things that “will never happen” in science.
There were people who wanted to close the patent office in the early 1900’s because everything that could be invented already had been invented... they had the steam engine, after all (real example they used)
I can see a computer getting *really* smart with enough processing power. I think our brain works (in some ways) like a computer and that the reason it seems like we only use a small percentage is because the rest is operating system.
I can imagine the power it would take to control the millions of nerves in a persons body such that a time pinprick on your foot immediately becomes the highest order process above all other processes to cause you to react and jump.
No, i think he meant ‘touring’ - you have to go on a bus tour with democrats and if it survives the illogical ordeal it is considered intelligent.
Lol,
Oooooweeee!
Don’t think my own mental architecture could withstand that one.
“Excuse me , is this your core memory on the floor? “
