EARTH CITY, Mo. -- The St. Louis Rams released defensive end Michael Sam on Saturday, according to multiple league sources.
Sam's efforts to become the first openly gay player in NFL history came up just short in a competition against undrafted rookie Ethan Westbrooks.
Westbrooks is one of nine defensive linemen to land a roster spot.
Sam officially hit waivers Saturday at 4 p.m. ET when all NFL teams had to trim their rosters down to the league-mandated 53 players. From there, the other 31 teams will have 24 hours to put in a claim for Sam.

Not only does he have to live with the fact he’s a homo, he can’t play football worth anything also.
So what if they cannot play much football? They are needed to socialize the rest of the team members, who I understand are much given to crude "locker-room" humor including .... gasp .... gender-normative taunts and hazing. This must stop.
They can keep the showers clean. Just picking up the soap would make for a more accident-free workplace.... Help the other players with wardrobe....of course, this becomes much more important if the team sodomites and catamites are of "color."
Perhaps as an NFL Season Finale, a couple of these valued musical footballers could be joined by a gay clergyman in some sort of ceremony at the 50-yard line.

A rookie’s shot is always slim, especially if a low draft choice or undrafted.
A team does not draft one’s sexuality but their athletic expertise.
If the Sam Fans want to change this so that every football player gets to play regardless of their skills, then the NFL should make 11 person teams (note my gender neutral noun?) a 2000 person side. And the way they have been changing the rules lately to a more kinder game, I would not be that surprised if they did something like that.
