I'm wondering if anyone here is Muslim, or is greatly knowledgeable about the Muslim religion. My one question is...What is the story of the 72 virgins waiting for Muslim martyrs?
Were they humans that lived on earth and died or were they created just for the Muslim martyrs? Do they have any life outside being virgins waiting for martyrs? What awaits female Muslim martyrs in the afterlife? 72 male martyrs?
Once a virgin has slept with a martyr, do they go on to a productive afterlife, or do they cease to exist?
Also, why virgins? I guess no one wants to be with someone that's slept with every guy on the block, but certified virgins seems kind of weird too--especially if the intent is to treat them all like a piece of meat and then move on to the next virgin.
If you were a sultan or someone like Hugh Hefner, won't you be moving down going to 72 virgins?
Also, why 72? Isn't that a rather small number for eternity? I mean, one a year and the martyr is through in 72 years, then a thousand years later he'll be looking on enviously at the guy that went with one only every 200 hundred years.
Please answer these questions if you are Islam or know a lot about Islam.
One does have to wonder about the 78 virgins. Imagine this scene, Achmed arrives in Paradise:

[Achmed] [now in the process of disrobing]: “ Yes, yes whatever, let’s get on with it man!”
[Keeper of the Virgins]: “ Well, the truth is: the Virgins are all 1500 years old and you have to share with all your 100 million brothers who gave themselves in Jihad. Here, Achmed, is your eternal reward”

As some have mentioned, the Koran is not specific on this subject. Mostly what you have are interpretations that have become broadly accepted. In that vein, the virgins are described as young & beautiful, with transparent skin. [Right there, that sounds...ugly. But whatever.] They exist only to please the martyr. He is given the strength of twelve men. He will never run out of virgins because their virginity regenerates. There are no children born in these unions, and all the traits normally associated with women—such as a menstrual cycle—are nonexistent.
Women, according to Islam, don’t get much of anything. Probably the only reason Muslim women martyr themselves is to either escape an honor killing [I’m not making this up; I read of such a case] or to escape hell in the afterlife. In Christianity hell is somewhat vague, and believers sometimes debate what it will be like. Islam, sadistic as it is, takes great pains to describe every detail of hell. It’s unspeakable torture All The Time.
Islamic hell is another reason, apart from the virgins, for the martyrs. Islam actually teaches that you cannot know your eternal destiny just from trying to live as a good Muslim. Allah is very tricksy, and he enjoys a good laugh at sending supposedly good Muslims to hell for shortcomings they weren’t even aware of. The only way to be sure of no unpleasant surprises is to martyr. Islamic martyrs are guaranteed paradise. Hence the strong motivation.
To clarify, I believe Islam is demonic to its core. A religion created by Satan himself. I’m just giving some info I have picked up while reading on the subject, fwiw.
I think you mean desirable after life, salvation. There are other choices for after-life.

One of the reasons Mohammed hates Christians is when he traveled to Heaven (in a dream, mad psychotic episode, who knows?) he had prophets, seers,saints, whoever bow down to him until he hit the top echelon. HOWEVER, I DID upset a Muslim woman once in the international airport, Frankfurt, Germany.
ALL the seats in the waiting/transit lounge were taken except one, next to a fatso Muslim woman. I knew she was Saudi because we had ALL gotten onto the same flight to Frankfurt from Dhahran (KSA) Airport. And THAT seat next to her had a book on it. It was a Koran.
I asked her to move it so I could sit down as I was very tired. She ignored me. I asked her again and she still ignored me. I KNEW she understood me because my body language was EXQUISITELY clear.
SO...I made out like I was going to SIT DOWN ON THE KORAN.
Lol. She almost had a fit. I told her: "Either move it or I sit on it."
She moved it.
:o) I enjoyed that, after I was refreshed from sitting down for a few minutes. Selfish ole bag.
I turned and looked at her, with a short head-shake, MORE than once, JUST to show her that I didn't feel bad AT ALL about what I said/did.

One Muslim guy I got into a “discourse” with about this, got irate when I suggested it was sexual in nature, and he insisted that us “sex-obsessed Americans” had it all wrong about the 72 virgins, but I could never get a straight answer out of him what it was all about.
Religion can appeal to your base nature or to your higher nature. The Koran almost never considers the possibility of a higher nature.

I interpret this as a very simple bribe. They are promising more sex than a teenager with nothing to live for can imagine - if that boy will just follow his Islamic leader’s orders. Since the promise is to be fulfilled in the afterlife, this gift costs nothing at all. The promise has lots of women because then it is pure carnal pleasure with none of the complexities of an actual emotional relationship. The women are virgins because of the appeal to certain people of defiling purity.

Well, maybe he did hate ISSA (Arabic word for Jesus) but the Saudis name all kind of stores and industries after Him: Issa's clothing store, etc.
Daryl Issa, the California congressman, is named Daryl Jesus.
The 30 Saudis I knew didn't hate Jesus. They thought he was a good man. That seemed to be the opinion of most Arab Muslims.
However the majority of Muslims are NOT Arabs.

It WAS a hoot when the Indian Sikhs were in California. The men wear the turbans, as you know. The women wear mustaches.
California law REQUIRES helmets for motorcycle drivers and riders. The Sikhs thought they could get away with NOT wearing helmets because of the RELIGIOUS significance of their turbans.
One Sikh DID come up with a helmet OVER his turban. We all ROARED over that one.

Your quotations are mostly from hadiths, not the Koran.
Mo was pretty vague in the Koran itself. The hadiths are where the details are found. Often contradictory.

Aren’t they supposed to call a doctor if that lasts more than four hours? I imagine eternity would be excruciating.
Now, we lived and worked in Saudi Arabia, SURROUNDED by Arab Muslims. My boss was Saudi Muslim. He was illiterate but had a fabulous memory and didn't need to "write down" the 15 things he had to do that day. He couldn't but he remembered them.
He was smart and figured out how to do things WITHOUT the written word.
Anyway, I had NEVER, EVER heard about that story of Mohammad. It sure isn't in the Koran. If you think it is, give me a chapter and verse; I'll look it up. My husband received a Koran in gratitude for our five years over there. It was considered an "appropriate" gift, in lieu of a car, watch or something.
But, people made/make impromptu interpretations about all kinds of things. I'm sure there are some absurd stories about California and earthquakes...absurd, no earthquakes here. :o)
