I'm wondering if anyone here is Muslim, or is greatly knowledgeable about the Muslim religion. My one question is...What is the story of the 72 virgins waiting for Muslim martyrs?
Were they humans that lived on earth and died or were they created just for the Muslim martyrs? Do they have any life outside being virgins waiting for martyrs? What awaits female Muslim martyrs in the afterlife? 72 male martyrs?
Once a virgin has slept with a martyr, do they go on to a productive afterlife, or do they cease to exist?
Also, why virgins? I guess no one wants to be with someone that's slept with every guy on the block, but certified virgins seems kind of weird too--especially if the intent is to treat them all like a piece of meat and then move on to the next virgin.
If you were a sultan or someone like Hugh Hefner, won't you be moving down going to 72 virgins?
Also, why 72? Isn't that a rather small number for eternity? I mean, one a year and the martyr is through in 72 years, then a thousand years later he'll be looking on enviously at the guy that went with one only every 200 hundred years.
Please answer these questions if you are Islam or know a lot about Islam.

It’s an open appeal to man’s lust and greed to get them to forfeit their lives and souls for nothing more than an empty promise.

The 72 virgins is part of an elaborate bait and switch operation geared towards the suicide bomber market. It’s like us going to a Chevy dealer looking for a Camaro and walking out of the showroom with a Volt.

You see, in the world of Mohammedism, heaven is perverted. So-called "martyrs" get to have veritable orgies when they go to heaven. Because, to these hordes, heaven is one big sex-fest. Glory is ultimately found with the skin; sensuality is the highest moral attainment.
I know a bit. There is some argument about the interpretation of the promise of 72 virgins. Some Muslims interpret that as grapes, or bountiful fruit available in heaven. For those falling in the virgin camp they believe that they are virgin women who have died. The 72 will be the many wives of the dude and they don’t go away after “deflowering”. Virgins are valuable in their culture, one big reason due to STD’s. You don’t want to be “second banana” where bathing doesn’t ever really happen for the desert tribes. Nasty. Women are not important enough in Islam to get any virgins. The Koran is interpreted a ton of ways so all of what I said could be argued.
The whole Muslim thing is a load of cr**. Religion it is not. World domination....submit or die!!
I asked a muslim guy about this once. He said a female martyr’s reward is that she gets to be one of the virgins.

The actual word in the Qu’ran is houri, which actually had no meaning in Arabic, being an East Syriac word for white raisins, and not an Arabic word at all.
The interpretation of the meaningless-in-Arabic-in-Mohammed’s-time word fell to Muslim jurists (That’s really all they have for clergy, you know, folks who interpret the Qu’ran, the Hadiths and existing fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence) to make pronouncements of the content of sharia). They decided that it meant “the companions of paradise” whom they described as “chastely amorous virgins” with lots of commentary in the form of sensual descriptions of the delights of their companionship.
Actually that passage is one of the Qu’ranic passages that gives textual support to the firm tradition among Arab Christians that Mohammed, before setting up as a warlord and starting his own religion to support his conquests, had been a Christian missionary sent by the Assyrian Church of the East into then-mostly-pagan Arabia. The passage contains a lot of words which are nonsensical as Arabic, but perfectly good East Syriac, and seems to be derived from a Christian description of the delight of Paradise.
Interestingly the Bishop of Kirkuk at the time Mohammed began his preaching was one Mar Gabriel, and the tradition of calling the bishop of a city “the angel” of the city (evidenced in St. John’s Apocalypse, a.k.a. the Book of Revelations), persisted among Arabic and Syriac speaking Christians, so that “the Angel Gabriel” might have meant the Bishop of Kirkuk, rather than the Bodiless One who announced the Incarnation to the Blessed Virgin Mary, at least when Mohammed started writing.
(We Orthodox Christians under the Patriarchate of Antioch tend to know a bit more about Islam than is typical for Christians, since our brethren in the “Old Country” speak Arabic and have had to live among Muslims since the late 8th century.)
