I had not seen Trackdown in a long time until two days ago. Had forgot about how the show’s director had McQueen’s cartridge belt full of nickel plated 45-70s. It shows how they don’t respect the viewers.
I think the Mare’s Leg is kind of a neat gadget but if your going to carry a six shooter then why not just use a pistol? Maybe seven with one in the chamber. One advantage it should have is faster reloads because you have already ejected your emptys.

Luke, Luke come away from the dark side! Ruger Mini-14 is a turd and will always be a turd. The only way to deal with a turd is to plant it in the ground and hope something grows.
Allow me to suggest 18.5” barrel with ghost ring sights from either Remington and then add one of the recoil reducing adjustable length of pull stocks from Knoxx.
Example shown here (more styles available)
I have a first gen Knoxx pistol grip with folding wire stock for my Mossberg 18.5” that I’ve been happy with. The new stocks offer more recoil reduction. The wire stock flips up and over to shorten OA length even more
The overall length reduction gives better control and easier swing movement in tight quarters. A very good combo for home defense IMO.
Add Federal reduced recoil tactical load 12gs 00 and it’s easier to stay on target on follow up shots.
I was a sceptic until I tried one.
Remington 870, Police model. Short barrel. Proven performer for decades. Recoil is felt-but will not cork screw you into ground.
Double barrel 12 ga, ......shorter overall length with legal 18 inch barrels.... will take duck bill chokes that screw in and easy for all in family to use. Politically correct in all 57 states with number 5 turkey shot.
With a stock sock ya have six spare rounds. I believe the savage version even has a rail for the surefire X400 series light and laser.
Comes in a 20 ga version as well .....
Here is link to information on the duckbill screw in chokes...

Hope it helps ya make a decision... Stay safe !
Just go AR for both wife and husband .... Maybe in 300 blackout if they want the quiet version with a can on it. Ammo is available in subsonic or hunting loads so it’s a good all round choice for lower 48 general purpose farm or ranch aka remote Arizona homes.
My opinion.
See if there's a range reasonably near you which allows you to rent a gun,
Before my kids got older, I mounted a pair of bicycle hooks inside my bedroom closet, above the door. Just reach up, grab, and rack the slide. The gun was out of sight unless you went into the closet and looked up. Something like below.
Interesting idea.Remington 870.
Simple and to the point and it always goes bang.
Tape a couple of disposable foam earplugs to the stock.
Although Low Info types will think youre carrying some rubber bullets
Took runner up at State with it.
I find that a 12-gauge kicks like a mule on the target range but that same recoil is just a mild thump when shooting at a duck, giving you feedback that you did indeed get off a shot. I dread testing the pattern on a new scattergun.
Up close, say less than 30 feet, birdshot is completely fatal and won’t penetrate walls quite so readily as a slug or buckshot. One nice thing about a pump is the ability to quickly discard the round in the chamber and move to the second round in the lineup. So put birdshot (#4 is my choice) in the pipe with 00 right behind it.
Forget the shotgun for now. Get an AR-15. Lighter, less recoil, quicker follow up shots, less risk of over-penetration with the proper ammunition.
Remington 870 in what ever gauge you are comfortable with.
Also a good backup is the Taurus Judge with .410 loads.
The #4 shot makes a nice pattern at close range.
DAMN NICE !!!
Whats the choke .... ?
You do not need a home defense shotgun “loaded for bear” unless you have bears coming into your house.
That is to say: Over home defense ranges, shot placement is very important. That is to say, sight system and control of muzzle rise is very important.
That’s why Massad Ayoob advocates 20 gauge/#3-#4 buckshot as the ideal combo.
If your environment is such that you anticipate engaging BGs outside of your 4 walls, get a rifle.
A Muller U1 (like IC), they’re a ceramic coated aluminum choke that produces very even patterns and weigh about 1/3 of steel. Plus they don’t get wad buildup, just wipe with a rag and go.
