Went to YouTube and watched the video....pretty clear Stewart hit Ward on purpose. Showed it to my husband without saying anything beforehand. His response? Wow......that driver aimed and throttled at the guy on the track!

Just can't bring myself to think it was intentional.
The driver in front of Tony almost hits Ward who steps back in time.
I'm thinking that car blocked Tony's view to some degree.

Looked to me like Stewart swerved but not to hit him but to try to dodge him and the guy was just in the way. It’s hard to control something going that fast.
It was a very tragic, unfortunate accident. It WAS crazy to walk out on a track filled with fast-moving machines, though!
