...Windows operating systems are like a grocery store chain. Just when you have finally gotten used to where everything in the store is located, they remodel and move everything to a new place...As a network admin this burns my ass. You get used to doing things and finding things to where it's second nature, just like driving a car. Then MS moves shit around.
Imagine Ford switching the gas pedal to the left foot. Grrr....

Well, yesterday I picked up a new machine (new for me!), a Dell Optiplex GX520, and grabbed a Windows 7 disk with it.
So I installed my SATA WINXP drive on it and then re-partitioned and installed Windows 7 on it...
But Windows 7 doesn’t want to activate.

No. They’ve said plenty of stupid things about political issues, and I’ve said that it just makes it easier to torrent their products rather than have money going to a Dem’s slush fund.
I just don’t pretend like I didn’t hear them say it. Apple people would rather shoot their ears off and plead deafness.

in the last couple of years, they've developed Windows Phone, which is actually, a much better OS If you have time I'd love to hear you explain why you like it.
Genuine question. I'm still looking for a phone I don't hate.

Really? I wonder your crashes had to do with a driver for your hardware? In 10 years I’ve only had a handful of freeze-ups and only one “kernel panic”. No viruses.
I’ve had a whole lot of “glitches” where things just aren’t perfect. The screensaver and the audio settings have had nagging gotchas on and off for years.
The Linux desktop experience isn’t perfect but it is fast, stable and secure.

That analogy is pretty lame.
If your analogy makes sense to you, then imagine a similar change in the computing world, where people were/are expected to go from using keyboards, to touching screen buttons to simulate the keyboard experience. People got used to it, but, the keyboard is a much better mechanism for interacting with a computer.
Why not complain about something that really happened, and not something that has yet to happen, and which probably will never happen?

And where Admin stuff, and things admins needed to work on, were stashed in Se7en, W8 [wait] has moved or locked in some illogical location.

I strongly disagree.....
People are buying Laptops, Tablets and Smart Phones these days. The Desktop has passed its peak. Besides Laptops, Tablets, Smart Phones affordability and port ability compared to a traditional desktop.... Apple, Google, Samsung have the online stores where people create millions of Apps, Music, Movies, TV show and books for their Laptops, Tablets and Smartphones. Microsoft reacted too slow to this. Yes they had an online store, but it was too restrictive, expensive and not user friendly. However, they have come a long way. Nevertheless, they are still behind the Apple, Google, Samsung and even new player... Amazon online stores.
Like you said Microsoft was late to the Smart phone market, and I believe they are falling behind fast. They may have a good product, but it maybe too late? Apple, Google and Samsung have saturated the market. So there customers are use to their operating system. Moreover, all of them are releasing new smart phones and Operating Systems ever year. Where is Microsoft? Finally, there is new player.... Amazon and their product is good and very affordable.

Still running 7 on all mine and have no plans to change unless forced to do so..
Win 7 is nice. It was finally a decent 64bit windows OS.
I tired windows 8 preview and almost died, it was horrible.

I have a laptop with a bad hard disk. I’m thinking about replacing the hard disk and putting LM17 on it.

If you have time I'd love to hear you explain why you like it.
To begin with, I have to explain that my current smartphone is an LG G2, and I love it. It's a very nice piece of gear.
However, it's not very intuitive with Android, and with WP, I would expect it to be a better device.
WP is very intuitive, and it's intended to work seamlessly with all of your other computing devices, including tablets and laptops and desktops, and with the "cloud".
Live tiles is actually a great function, and it's nice to know what's happening with your applications at a glance.
Cortana is the new voice control for WP, and it's quite nice, and seems to be more in tune with the owner and his/her needs, than what one finds with Google's voice control or with Siri.
It's very easily customizable, and perhaps easier than Android and iOS.
The cameras on WP/Nokia, are by far the best in the smartphone industry, and even the cheapest Lumia smartphones have camera quality that's about equal to what one finds in high-end Android phones and in any iPhone version. Plus, the picture and camera support which comes with Lumias, are much better than can be found in regular Androis and iPHones.
There is more, but, I'm not a tech blogger and you can do your own look-up and research.
However, here is a link which supports most of my views:

NEVER expect a “preview” version of an OS to work as the final release of the OS. Nobody can ever expect the same functionality and problem-free operation, as with the release to production.

For what it is worth, Vista after SP1 was a remarkably stable OS. I had it on 4 home devices and on my office desktop for years. No real issues at all.
Win 8 is Win 7 built to accommodate touch technology devices. It has worked very well on my touch tech devices and several of my colleagues use it without problems on their non-touch desktops and have since the beta.
ME, yes that OS was crap and 95 was pretty buggy for some things but 98 took care of most of those issues.

The underpinnings of the OS worked fine, the interface was just intolerable....
