NORWALK (CBSLA.com) — Wildlife officials were set Friday to canvass a residential neighborhood in Norwalk where a video surveillance camera captured what appeared to be a large wild cat – possibly a lion – prowling the area.
KNX 1070’s Bob Brill reports Norwalk Public Information Officer Jeff Hobbs said he has received confirmation that the animal “was not a mountain lion.”
The video footage dated July 29 – which captured images of the animal in front of a home in the 11000 block of Tina Street near Orr and Day Road – was sent to the state Department of Fish and Wildlife, according to Hobbs.
The city of Norwalk is located about 8 miles southwest of the Turnbull Canyon mountain bike trail in Hacienda Heights, which has had some reports of mountain lion sightings in recent years.
However, Hobbs said officials have not yet determined exactly where the animal may have come from.
“I think most people are coming down on the side of, ‘Oh, that’s an old lion who’s just looking for something to drink,” he said.
In the video footage, the animal appeared to have a mane and looked more like the type of lion seen at a circus or zoo and appeared to be non-aggressive.
A representative from the Department of Fish and Wildlife will be visiting local residents to “pass out literature and let them know what’s going on,” Hobbs said. Authorities say they will respond to reports of a actual sighting as opposed to just a video.
Authorities say anyone who encounters the animal should treat it as potentially dangerous and notify law enforcement officials immediately.

Its a couger all right—I have seen them up close. In our neck of the woods—we have a legendary “Black Panther” that has been seen for decades.

Counsellor: Really. And do these lions eat ants?
Anchovy: Yes, that's right.
Counsellor: Er, well, Mr Anchovy ... I'm afraid what you've got hold of there is an anteater.
Anchovy: A what?
Counsellor: An anteater. Not a lion. You see a lion is a huge savage beast, about five feet high, ten feet long, weighing about four hundred pounds, running forty miles per hour, with masses of sharp pointed teeth and nasty long razor-sharp claws that can rip your belly open before you can say 'Eric Robinson', and they look like this.

It was one of the sketches performed by Monty Python in their final show. If I hadn’t seen it last month, I probably wouldn’t have cited it in 2 articles hence that time.

OK, if it’s not a mountain lion what is it? Because it sure looks like a mountain lion to me. I admit there is no way really to judge the size from the screen shot. But just look at the legs, what non-mountain lion cat has legs that long?

I love cats too, and if it is a mountain lion, it’s a danger to kittehs...and their hoomins.
I read a terrifying story about a canadian woman who was out in the wilderness (I guess they were hiking or something) and she gave up her life fighting off a mountain lion, kept it from killing her kid.
It was a “no guns allowed” story, but I’m sorry you’re a fool if you go into real wilderness without a gun.
And based on that poor jogger who was killed by the two dogs the other day, even into suburban “wilderness”.
It’s not just people who kill people, animals kill people too.
