Nigerian health authorities raced to stop the spread of Ebola on Saturday after a man sick with one of the world’s deadliest diseases brought it by plane to Lagos, Africa’s largest city with 21 million people.
The fact that the traveler from Liberia could board an international flight also raised new fears that other passengers could take the disease beyond Africa due to weak inspection of passengers and the fact Ebola’s symptoms are similar to other diseases.
Officials in the country of Togo, where the sick man’s flight had a stopover, also went on high alert after learning that Ebola could possibly have spread to a fifth country.
Screening people as they enter the country may help slow the spread of the disease, but it is no guarantee Ebola won’t travel by airplane, according to Dr. Lance Plyler, who heads Ebola medical efforts in Liberia for aid organization Samaritan’s Purse.
“Unfortunately the initial signs of Ebola imitate other diseases, like malaria or typhoid,” he said.

“I was always under the impression that if an AIDS infected man slept with a straight woman the virus could be spread?”
That’s a common belief, but it ha been proven to be not correct. That was put out there to panic the hetero population to spend money on it. And that part worked.
Though it’s more likely to be transmitted from a man to a woman than the other way around, the odds are very low unless anal sex is on the menu with the couple. Aids is a blood infection, and unless the virus finds it’s way into the blood stream, infection doesn’t happen.
Imagine if this gets loose in the petri dish that is San Francisco.
Ebola is not selective — if it crosses our open borders, it will end up in WDC sooner or later.
And when it does, guvmint will start paying attention.
It may be airborne as it has spread to people on airplanes.

You are correct in that, but if you go over the numbers you will see that the risk is about the same as riding a bike 4 miles. Or getting struck by lightning.
It’s a shame about the kids who get it from an infected mother, their risk is significant. But the root means of infection is still anal sex. That’s how the mom got it. either that or a dirty needle.
My understanding based on what I have read is that people with Ebola have gotten on airplanes and flown to other places, this is not the same as saying that transmission of the virus now occurs via droplet by air from one person to another.
I have not read that a person who was previously uninfected became infected after air travel with a sick individual. If this is the case it should be the top breaking headline in every world news outlet.
No the mom typically gets it from Dad. Its Dad who gets it from anal sex with an infected person.
Or from a needle.
If you read “The Hot Zone”, one of the main fears was a mutation that could make ebola airborne.
Foxnews reported this morning that the US Doctor who self-diagnosed caught it from someone on the airplane from Nigeria to Liberia.
Beyond that its all speculation. Perhaps the infected person sneezed on him, threw up on him, or bled on him. It would still have to have gotten into his bloodstream through a cut, eyes, or mouth.
Other medical personnel are catching it from patients they are treating. Perhaps its a little easier to catch than they admit.

Early on before they understood what it was they did not know they were infected. Now there are guys called “bug-chasers” who have sex with known infected men to get the disease. There are also men who have it and have unprotected sex on purpose without informing their partners. Their purpose is to spread the disease. This is apparently no longer illegal as a court recently let a guy go who did this. (Some politician cut the tracking bracelet off the man’s ankle and a crowd cheered.)
Yeppers. Just like I’ve been saying, we’re one plane ticket or border crossing from having it in the US.

I believe you are correct. Plus there is the shared needles of drug users. I think the fact that a person can be infected with HIV and spreading the disease for such a long period of time gave pause to those proposing quarantine. Still should have done it.
