Nine out of 10 parents admit that spanking their children is sometimes appropriate. This week, a New York court ruled in favor of a father charged with child abuse, saying that it was a reasonable use of force.
On Fox and Friends this morning, psychiatrist Dr. Keith Ablow said its never a good idea to spank kids.
The bottom line is its always the end of the discussionhitting your kids. Its never the beginning of a discussion. It teaches them nothing, he said.

Mom use a wooden spoon, hair brush or anything she had in her hand. Now the “old Man” used a belt!!!
Dodson’s book on parenting the strong willed child.
Had it. He’s a Marine now. :)
Really, honey child?
It seems to me that with my parents the punishment was the "talk" that came afterwords. Gah! I absolutely HATED the "talk". Who, what, where, when and why with a topping of "we are disappointed in you".
LOL, mine is a professional banjo player. Go figure.
I bet his dominatrix spanks him often.
“Nine out of 10 parents ADMIT that spanking their children is sometimes appropriate.”
ADMIT?? You ADMIT to a crime. How about the word AGREE??
It doesn’t take long to figure out what kind of reporter we’re dealing with here.
“So smack first and ask questions later?”
Worked GREAT with my kids.
A couple of the blacks that I work with (in a professional job, requiring serious education) come from very poor backgrounds.
They both told me that they had a lot more to deal with than having their I-Phone taken away for a week when they acted up (or got bad grades). No different for their kids either...and those kids will do just fine when they grow up.
“Shrinks know undisciplined kids grow up to need psychiatric care.”
You may be on to something there. That is the ONLY WAY I can see how a group of people that make their living studying and (supposedly) understanding this stuff can conclude that spanking doesn’t work.
My college psychology prof asked us if our child was sitting in the street and a truck was barreling down the road toward them. Would we 1. Divert their attention to another activity 2. Reason with them about the approaching danger or 3. Grab them out of the way of the truck and then great their little asses.
The correct answer, at least in 1977, was beat their ass.
I hate auto correct....it’s BEAT their little asses.
I have had numerous dogs and have never had to strike one to get them trained. I find that use of rewards and tone of voice is sufficient.
You said a mouth full. Having raised 3 boys, I know to well the mischief they can get into. Children do NOT reason, they do NOT think, they are impulse driven, until taught other wise.
Case in point, oldest was about 10, left with grandfather, so I could take my mom for groceries, as she did not drive, and he hated that chore. He was tilling, left the partially filled gas can out, left the site for a few minutes, Little MR Know it ALL dribbled the gas half way to the house when it ran out. Then he went and got the torch sparker out of the garage. WHOOM! No real damage was done. Until I got home and gave him a taste of the BELT. Never set another fire in his youth. Youngest was stubborn, took getting burned on the hot oven to make an impression on him as a toddler that HOT meant NOT to touch.
Took different methods to teach each child. But when it came to what was dangerous activities, the belt was the cure to curbing it.
That was the WORST. I would rather take a paddling than have my Mom or Dad say that.
I have used the "disappointed" tactic many times with my child, and it still works well. :-)
I like Keith Ablow but on this we disagree.
I raised 3 sons. All received a swat on the behind as toddlers for safety issues, but as they grew into their own personalities, the punishment had to fit the crime and the personality.
My oldest was spanked, although not often.
My middle son was a different story. Spanking served no purpose except as a means for him to get the better of me.
I spanked my youngest son once. He could not believe I actually turned him over my knee and gave him 1 spank just hard enough to sting through the blue jeans. From then on out, all I had to do was say “Do I need to get your attention?”
Stopped right there where he said spanking is “hitting your kids”.
He’s a dumbass, end of the discussion.
Me too. I was scared of my dad. You didn’t want to anger him. Out comes the belt. Even though all he did was to line us up oldest to youngest and then walk up and down the line snapping his belt for audio effect and chewing you out, you were ready to obey long before the belt lashed out at you. One time it hit the bottom of my nightgown and I ran upstairs screaming like he had beaten me black and blue. I never thought to cross him or sass him.
If that worked with humans, we wouldn't need the military.
I found that tone of voice worked pretty well in basic training.
