Drummer Tommy Ramone, the last member of the original 1970s punk band the Ramones, died Friday of cancer, according to Variety. He was 62.

Sex Pistols sucked, yes, but The Ramones had some nice simple melodic tunes...Beach Boy style. Nothing like typical punk crap. A lot of bad songs, but a lot of good ones. Doesn’t hurt that they were Republicans.

It covers pub rock, the rockabilly revival of the early 70s, and more. Some of it as a reaction to arena rock/”super rock”, glam, and prog.
It’s also good to see one of the early performers claim that any rock and rollers in the 70s who said they “hated the Beatles and the Stones” was a liar.
Fleetwood Mac were much better as a blues band (early days) than a fern bar “soft rock” act.
Motown wasn’t about connecting singer/songwriters to an audience. It was a “hit factory” churning out studio product (studio writer, studio performers, packaged singers).
It was mixed to sound good on an AM car radio.
There is much better 60s soul than Motown.
How sad. Rest in peace, Tommy.
Boston stinks. The Ramones were great.
I liks Motown as well as Stax and Chess. For me it depended on the artists.
There was a lot of pop sound in Motown, but now and then the soul came through.
I think if you put our a dozen records a week for years, you’re going to get some of them right.
One of my favorite experiences was at the Long Beach Blues Festival in 1994. They brought out these two old guys from Mississippi and they sat in chairs on the edge of the stage. They played 4 songs and left. Both in their late 80s and rarely had played outside the state. That was a special time.
There’s a WHOLE WORLD of music that never made the radio playlists. And the playlists of today are even more restricted (and that goes double for the “forgotten” hits that charted years ago).
To listen to “classic rock” radio of today is to mean that the Beatles never existed, Led Zepplin had only 4 songs, Jimi Hendrix 2 song, etc....
In the late 1960s, Klaus Flouride played in the band Magic Terry & The Universe, which included 1980s rock singer Billy Squier.
Springsteen wrote “Hungry Heart” for the Ramones and then took it back for himself.
In the past decade, Tommy had a bluegrass band called Uncle Monk

never. :-) Progressive bands and their descendants still exist and perform. They don’t have mass following but ... heck ... the masses elected Obama twice. Yes, ELP, Kansas, Gentle Giant etc could actually play their instruments and write music beyond 3 chord rock. not everyone likes that style of music and that is fine. I saw Yes last year. Not as good as they were in the 90s but still incredible they could still perform whole albums of complex music live.
Having said that ... I like all kinds of music and hard rock. I confess to liking at least one Ramones song — “Glad to see you go” ... “in a fit of passion ... get the the thrill like Charles Manson”. strange but original
