You’re probably infected with some form of malware. Clean that up and then install an ad blocker. In general, don’t use Internet Explorer unless you have to; I’m less and less fond of Firefox as time goes on, but it’s still superior in terms of keeping your system safe.
I’d also look at using Opera or Safari instead, not only are they both safer than IE, they’re generally not as often targeted by malware.
In Explorer, click on the little gear on the far right, top. Go to “internet options.” Select “privacy” tab. Select “pop-up blocker.” Check it. Look at “option” to see that somebody hasn’t allowed the world to opt out.

In palemoon (probably the same in firefox) go to Tools/Options/Content and be sure the check-box “block popup windows” is checked.
If it’s happening while you’re on FR you’ve got some malicious code attached to your browser. You might try something like spybot or adaware to clean it up. We have no pop ups on FR. Or perhaps just clear your local cache, delete cookies and reboot. That sometimes clears up weird problems.

sounds like you got a virus/trojan horse/bug of some sort in your system.
It’s malware. It configures your browser to send you ads and to sites of their choosing. Get Malwarebytes and run a scan, it’s free.
I think you have been infected by “Vondoo”... Nasty, I got rid of it once for a friend with the help of “Pro’s”, Malawarebytes and Combofix maybe your only friends @ this point....
Its more than ads, you have some kind of adware installed which is pushing these. Probably installed with that latest software you ran. Check firefox add ons and disable.

I want to echo everyone’s recommendation to install Malwarebytes.
But I find it works best if you run it after you’ve started up in Safe Mode with Networking.
A pop-up blocker will not help you, because you are infected with adware/viruses.

Restart your computer and press F8 before the Windows screen comes up to bring up the boot menu. Select “Safe Mode with Networking Support”.
When Windows starts up, run RKill first, this will stop any virus/malware processes that managed to start up in Safe Mode. Next, run MalwareBytes scan and remove anything that it finds. Then, run Sophos Anti-Rootkit to make sure that the bad stuff doesn’t just reinstall itself when you reboot.
95% of the time, that should fix your problems. If not, report back and we can try some other stuff.
