(Perry) came under sustained attack from his rivals...for signing a 2001 Texas law granting in-state tuition rates at state universities to illegal immigrant students.
If you say that we should not educate children who have come into our state for no other reason than they've been brought there by no fault of their own, I don't think you have a heart.

Well, him being an idiot didn’t help.
We could sure have done better.
And remember, the Feds say mandatory education for ALL children through 12th grade in every state.
I really don't see the objection.
Thanks for posting. Unfortunately many have forgotten. Then there are those who never objected. They are perfectly satisfied with Texas' pro-ILLEGAL alien governor pandering to the ILLEGAL hordes and want him to do the same on a national level.
Maybe he was just on drugs to control pain from back surgery. Either way....
What does GOPe mean?
So, Rick Perry is currently scoring points against the liberals and amnesty, therefore, NBC tries to remind everyone how much the right hated him.
Typical liberal journalism running interference for their masters.
It is sad to see FReepers falling for this.
And before someone runs their mouth, no, I would not want Perry for our nominee.
Illegal immigrants entering Texas’ higher education system are direct beneficiaries of a 1982 Supreme Court decision, Plyler vs. Doe. Parents in Tyler sued after the state began charging tuition for illegal immigrant children. The court ruled that Texas and the rest of the country must educate illegal immigrant children free of charge in public schools.
Thanks for the needed reminder for the Perry-Bots.
I have been seeing a lot of Perry-Bots profess that Perry will take the lead and "sovle" this border problem.
I have to laugh at these naive foolish Perry-Bots.
We are truly about to lose our Republic and all Perry has done and will do forever is talk, talk, talk, talk, talk, talk, talk, talk, talk, talk, talk, talk, talk, talk, talk, talk, talk, talk, talk, talk, talk.
To all you foolish Perry-Bots please mark this post. Then come back every month and note what "action" Perry has taken.
If Perry was a true leader then he would call on Texans to prepare to assemble in citizens militias to completely seal the border.
If Perry was a true leader he would order Sheriffs across the State to arrest any Federal official (including black-robbed tyrants) resisting the operation.
To save our Republic our border needs to be completely sealed and all illegals rounded up and deported.
Perry has the chance to be a historic figure. Sadly, I have no doubt he will just be another blathering fool who stands by while our Republic is turned into a third world sewer.
In Massachusetts the stipulation says Massachusetts high scholl OR equivalent thereof. You can drive a Dreamer Train through that loophole.
The "e" stands for "elite" (or, according to some, for "establishment"). Meaning the non-Tea Party Republicans.
Was he still on drugs when he endorsed for reelection the man who said he was waging war on the TEA Party, Mitch McConnell? Was he still on drugs when he said Hillary was "A great Secretary of State"?
The excuses for Perry's failures to represent conservatives are not sufficient to overlook his horrendous record.
We are all heartless.
I have a better idea. if they are here illegally, deport them. If their parents are here illegally, deport them. Let them go to college in their own country.
Perry has a long history of being weak on border/illegals issues. He was always beholden to his big-money, pro-illegals, open-border donors (like the other “Perry,” the zillionaire homebuilder, and the HEB grocery guy). Talks tough, convinces a lot of people, but then does nothing.
Oddly enough, I thought the potential was there for Perry to go against his usual pattern, and take full advantage of the “political opening” created by this invasion, and genuinely take charge, sending the Texas Guard, the militias, and everything but the kitchen sink. It would have shown him as a big can-do “leader” in opposition to Obama, and put him immediately in the forefront of candidates for the 2016 presidential primaries. But he’s staying true to form... talking a lot, blaming the Feds, and not really doing much.
The article is from 2011.
It is sad to see FReepers falling for this.
It is far sadder to see people buying perry's bs line that he is a helpless victim that can't do anything.
Today, 15 states allow individuals who are in the United States illegally to pay the same in-state tuition rates as legal residents of the stateswithout providing the same rates to others. By circumventing the requirements of § 1623 these states are violating federal law, and the legal arguments offered to justify such actions are untenable, no matter what other policy arguments are offered in their defense.
For public colleges, out of state tuition is about three times in-state tuition. If illegal aliens who are not legal residents of the US or the state for that matter can attend public colleges funded by the taxpayers at a reduced rate, where is the fairness in that? And illegal aliens are taking the place of American citizens who could be attending the school.
It is also illegal for someone illegally in this country to work here. So why should we be subsidizing people who can't work here legally. And to make matters worse, many of these Dreamers will benefit from being a minority in terms of admissions.
The bottom line is that it is illegal and the taxpayers are footing the costs.
Plyler vs Doe only applied to K-12.
Yup. Perry's long history of being pro-ILLEGAL alien trumps and recent misgivings he may have regarding the current invasion of our southern border.
hes staying true to form... talking a lot, blaming the Feds, and not really doing much.
Yep that's exactly what he wants. He wants conservatives to think he's a victim who can't do anything, but sure would if he could.
And simultaneously, by not really doing anything real, he avoids angering/energizing the left against him.
A perfect self-serving GOPe political solution.
