Thousands of Costco shoppers took to the wholesaler's Facebook page threatening to drop their store memberships after the retailer pulled copies of Dinesh D'Souza's newest anti-Obama book from its shelves, but a company official insists the decision was financial, not political.
And the reaction got almost immediate results as the company announced it would put D'Souza's book, "America: Imagine a World Without Her," back on its shelves, despite, what it says are poor sales.
"Costco is not a book store. Our book shelf space is very limited," read a statement posted shortly after 8 p.m. on Tuesday. "We exercise discipline in the best utilization of that limited space based solely on what our members are buying. We can't carry every title that our members are interested in reading. We are constantly monitoring book sales, and make decisions to pull books off the shelves frequently based on sales volume to make room for other titles. Politics or controversy over content do not influence our decisions."
The statement, signed by "Dave," went on to say the movie had renewed interest in the book causing "brisk sales at locations still in stock."
"Therefore, we have made the decision to reorder the book," added Dave.

America by D’Souza is #1 on Amazon!!!!!!!! (yesterday at least)-
So should be selling at Costco too
well, membership costs money and I would interpret this action as people saying “we’re not going to keep paying unless you stock the products we want”
In this case yes. With some companies the threat of loss of patronage doesn't work because they actually don't want certain types of people as customers. Costco doesn't strike me as that type of company.
Hillary's book has fallen OUT of Amazon's top 100 best sellers' list...
You're a liar, Dave...
Looks like its #1 on iTunes, too.
As I recall, initially, one had to be a goobermint employee to join Costco...
Yes; we haven’t darkened the door of a Costco or Penney’s in several years. Penney’s because of the homosexual issue. Costco because of the breathtaking amount of money they donated to help get Obama elected.
I sure do miss Costco’s pizza and coffee beans. And our cat loved the Kirkland canned peas. :)
Even hard core lefties have to submit to market forces if they want to stay in business. When they feel the heat they see the light!
Anyone who loves this country and wants her to survive should do what you have done.
This situation creates an interesting choice for conservatives here in the reddest state in America (Oklahoma, in case you weren't aware) where Costco is just making its entrance in the Tulsa and OKC markets. There are plenty of consumers here who have wanted an alternative to Sam's so there is some pent-up demand. Also, the American attention span is notoriously short. I expect initial interest and membership will be strong but another misstep like this book might pose a real challenge in a red state where you are new in the market.
Things just aren’t the same now that the dogs tongue touched the butter . It’s too late ,, a lot of people who do not want to go where costco would like to take us should not forgive this move . This is what happens when businesses go political .
D’Souza should send them a thank you note for all the free advertising.
Same here. I tried them for awhile, but found we were throwing away expired stuff far too often. Then it was just me and two kids. Now just me and one kid. We don’t have a need for that kind of bulk.
I think it contributes some to our obesity and gluttony in this country. Was thinking back - all you can eat buffets, warehouse stores, etc. For my bulk/staple stuff, if I can get it, I actually use Amazon’s Subscribe & Save.
Exactly.
Too late for me, I dumped them early in month when I found out their CHL policy was to strip ‘em at door.

When conservatives don’t listen to the faux so called conservatives, who never want us to use our buying power as a tool/weapon, we can often have dramatic results.
Our buying power is a powerful tool/weapon when use like this.
Use it, flex it and if that doesn’t work, use like a sledge hammer.
